A Busy, but Great and Fun Time at W&W 2013

It was an extremely busy week at Watches & Wonders.  I want to apologize to Wushengji…he tried to contact me and meet at the Exhibit, but I had too many things on my schedule…so I could not meet him.

This is an interesting, interactive, display that shows 24 VC in-house mfg. movements.  In front of the display glass is a touch screen.  You can select types of movements, or a single movement…it will shine spotlights on the actual movements in the display and a detailed description/introduction about the movement will show up on the large screen behind the movements.  This is the first time this display has been used and I really hope they have it in Geneva for SIHH 2014 because it was really fun to play with.

The Historiques collection was shown in an interesting way, with the original and Historiques watches in one display.

I love the Cal 1731, and they had an extra large model of it at the show.  I wanted to take it, but was told this model was just as expensive as wristwatch itself!

Three very special pocket watches were on display, the Fouad, the Packard, and a Poluzzi

There was a special exhibit of VC’s ultra-thin repeater watches.  Here are some of the ones that came before the introduction of the new 1731 wristwatch minute repeater.

1940s

VC records show 2 pieces of this minute repeater with triple calendar were produced, but only one left the manufacture.  This is the one that left, and was bought back at auction.  Nobody knows whatever happened to the second piece.

This is a vintage jewelry watch made into a bracelet, the watch itself is on a moveable hinge.

I have said this many time, half the fun of watch collecting is the people you meet and the friends you make.  Anybody that has read my posts on previous Events that I have attended knows that with great watches comes great food!  We had collectors dinners every night of the week.  They were held at a restaurant named Sevva, in HK’s Central district on the top floor of the Prince’s Building.

Cocktails were held on the outside balcony, which provided an amazing 360-degree view of HK at night.

Some people thought I was losing my hair and suggested I use this as a wig laugh  (It is the cotton candy that came from one of our deserts!)

But to me, what was very special, was that a group of Collectors from Singapore invited Alex Ghotbi and myself to lunch!
The kindness and spirit of my fellow VC collector’s really makes me smile.  Thank you guys!
Great photos Dan ! I love the 1921 QP. If I recall...

Thank you very much Dan for sharing these moments of happiness:-) I hope to meet the very kind Daisy one day in person as she is the one who brought my "bride" back to me ;) Btw, the Marie Antoinette cotton candy couldn't shift the focus off the Malta cufflinks, not at a VC dinner : D
Looks like a fun time was had by all

You have included some excellent photos.  The presentation of the Historiques watches with their historical counterparts is killing me.  I love this! And I want one of each!  Would loved to have seen that display.  The Historiques line is so strong right now. I love your new headress -- pink is a good color for you.  But we need a close-up on those cuff links.  Please. Thanks for this terrific report. Best always, Robert
Thanks, Dan, for the great photos

Very nice to get a taste of the wonderful time everyone had! Very nice watches  and that display is so great a real historico-techno tour de force. I sure hope they have on in Geneva. Such a great idea! And those macarons with spun sugar......outrageous, but delicious. Thanks so much for sharing! Best, Joseph
Great watches, food and friends! What else is there to want?

Other than one of those fantastic pieces you presented in your post?! A great year for VC, indeed! BTW, do you see this dual novelty presentation a year (SIHH & WW) as a new trend for VC and other manufacturers? Cheers Dan!
I didn't see it for the other manufacturers this year
10/02/2013 - 04:05
W&W is such a new thing for all of them, that I don't think they really knew what to expect or exactly how to prepare.  So I think VC really stuck out this year because of all of its novelties (as opposed to a simple dial change or the exact same watches as already shown at SIHH in January). It would be great (IMO) if VC had the novelties to do something like this every year (I mean different watches being introduced, not necessarily Women's in Jan. and Men's in Sept.).   But I don't know if VC could pull off so many new products EVERY year.  I think of it like a winery, some years you have great grapes and a great harvest...other years the volume is not so much. If there is a year where the quantity of ne introductions is not high, I don't know if I'd want them all in one show...or spread out?  Sometimes you want the slow burn...other times you want the quick sizzle.  I think it will depend on what VC management knows will be available and then they will determine how to manage the specific year's product launches.  (my 2 cents). BR, Dan
one reason there were so many VC novelties at W&W was that
10/02/2013 - 06:49
SIHH was to focus only on ladies watches and had VC introduced all these new pieces the Florileges, Malte and Patrimony lady models would have gone unnoticed
Just wish the order had been reversed

what a great time! everything was united: watches, food and

friends. However if anyone has a good crash diet please let me know as I've gained heavilyfrown Dan, for a moment when I saw the title of your post I read "Busty" instead of "Busy"cheeky ... I need a vacation!
Pleasure to have met you Dan

Thanks for the photos and sharing our story in W&W with the rest. You told me about the pink crown during our dinner (when we had the blue "cotton" sweet instead of the pink one). It fits you like a king! :P cheers, robin
The pleasure was all mine Robin!

beautiful watches, great food and common-passioned friends.......

What more to ask? Looking forward for an encore next year!
Cool post Dan

The dinner looked like a lot of fun... WHoa, what an impressive collection on watches. I, like you, would very much love to have this bigger version of the 1731 - aesthetically the nicest caliber I have probably ever seen, only bested by Laurent Ferrier's tourbillon movement (at least in my humble opinion) Cheers,  Francois
Thanks Francois, I'll be happy to take one of each!
