the Cal 13’VZ 434

i have two questions.

1、 the Cal 13’VZ 434           what are the  characters “  vz  “   mean for ?

2、the Cal 13’VZ 434  was a calibre based on  valjoux 22.

      valjoux 22  is a 14 ’’  calibre.

did  V&C change the valjoux 22  to 13’’  ?  i have no  idea.

The VZ identifies Valjoux's 13-ligne base movement from the 1920s which was subsequently developed into a chronograph caliber to meet the growing demand for wristwatches and spawned the Val. 22 family.  Going by V&C's designation, I assume it was the early 13-ligne VZ variant that became the basis of the caliber 434.  You will find a pre-chronograph iteration used by Audemars Piguet in their VZSS caliber.

Yes, both Val 22 and 23 were based on, or more appropriately "developed from", the earlier VZ (Valjoux Zähler) monopusher chronograph.  Ligne size simply refers to the width of the base plate.  Originally the term "calibre" also referred to size but has since come to mean the unique characteristics of the entire movement including plates, holes, and gear train.

Have a good look at these pictures from Alex's article; The History of Vacheron Constantin Wrist Chronographs, and you will recognize that despite their differences, the plates were manufactured using the same machinery.

 cal. 434 and valjoux 22 also based on Valjoux's 13-ligne ? cal. 434 and valjoux 22 also based on Valjoux's 13-ligne ?

In the article you will also find reference to early V&C chronograph wrist watches using Reymond Frères ebauches.  They were the original company from which Valjoux movement manufacture was born in 1929 and the VZ was a direct descendant of Reymond.
