Caliber 454 Vintage Watch Opinion

Hello all,

I am new here and new to Vacheron Constantin. I collect others but know very little about VC.

My sister is considering a vintage VC for her husband. The dial has been refinished and I was wondering if that is considered a "deal breaker" so to speak.

I am anxious to get any opinions on this one as Haute Horologerie like this is a bit beyond my area. I mainly collect  RR grade pocket watches and more modern sport watches. Thanks for any advice or guidance.

a gorgeous watch and a fantastic movement! The fact that the

dial has been refurbished certainly lessens the value of a vintage watch but its not a deal breaker in my book. Collectors may be very picky on this but I would say it applies to the more complicated and expensive pieces.

The Cal 454 is part of those movements which watchmakers today look back at and say WOW! To illustrate this have a look at this post: a fantastic tribute to cal 454

Welcome to the Lounge and your sister will definately make her husband happy

Some like movements....

and collect representatives of worthy calibres regardless of case condition.  If that is your pleasure you have a wonderful piece!

If the appearance matters, then originality suffers with the refinished dial.  The name appears a bit too low IMHO   I'm also wondering about the case size...is it 30mm?  There are larger models with that movement that are more "in style" when worn today.

BTW, thanks Alex for posting that link to the earlier review

Thanks gentlemen, I appreciate the input.

Alex, I re-read that post you linked to and the movement of the watch in question looks very similar, and is probably close in vintage. The dealer said the case size is rather large for the time at about 35mm.

I'll pass along the comments to my sister and help and it will surely help her to make a more informed decision. I like the watch- and will continue to haunt this forum for my own edification. VC's are beautiful watches!

Much appreciated!

Clyde

I gather the watch is from the 50s and at time 35mm was the

standard size for watches.

Looking forward in "seeing" you here and you'll see VC is a great brand even more so if you like vintage

I agree with what has been said, and if the refinished dial is not an issue, then your sister's husband will undoubtedly enjoy the watch. I have a very similar one, as you can see from this image.

I should add...

that the dial on mine is original, so it appears that the placement of the type on yours is accurate.

Thanks, Tony. I was glad to see your original dial and noted the appearance of the refinished one was so similar.

Alex, I suspect I will continue stopping by as I like vintage very, very much. My first watch that "hooked" me on collecting was a keywind silver Swiss lever pocket watch.

gorgeous watch Tony! (nt)
