Changing Straps on the Malte Chrono

Hi Everyone,

I've been thinking more and more about changing straps on my RG Malte Chrono.

I'm not crazy about the color that came with it and I was thinking of maybe using a Dark Blue OEM strap top pick up the Blue Chrono hand and the subdial hand as well.  I thought that might loook really cool but I'm just not sure.  Has anyone ever done that before or even if not what are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

you should go for it Tom! you'll never know for sure till you try it..

Hi Tommy, It depends on the shade of blue. Really dark, midnight blue would probably work but anything lighter would draw attention to the strap more than you might like. I tried it with a medium blue strap on a vintage GP watch I have. It has a dark blue dial. But, alas, the strap was too light. Its still on and doesn't look too bad, but now I'm looking for something darker. If the case is rose gold, you might want to consider a really dark brown, semi-gloss strap. I did that with a few of my VC watches and the results were outstanding.. Have you ever changed the strap on a watch? Regards, Joseph
Thanks Joseph.....

I do worry about that and I don't know how dark the VC blue strap is.   Maybe it's safer to try the dark brown.  I just don't like the reddish brown strap that came with the watch.  Where did you get the dark brown strap?  Was it a OEM?  Did they really look great with the dark brown? I've never changed a strap before and I'd probably have the AD do it for me if I got a new one.  Any info you can give me on the dark brown strap I'd appreciate. Best regards, Tom

I know that VC will do custom colours but it would be difficult to judge the colour exactly without seeingit in real life unless your monitor is properly colour corrected. I did get a strap from the boutique in Geneva when they didn't have exactly what I wanted but I was able to choose a colour from a palette and they shipped it to me. That was during last years SIHH. I do have a really nice brown strap on my Jump hour from VC so its possible to getthe exact colour, even blue but you have to see the straps, swatches or palettes yourself to decide. I did get a couple of really nice dark brown straps from a little shop in Paris. But again seeing them and choosing exactly what you like avoids disappointment. Regards, Joseph

Joseph, Thanks for the info. I guess I'll go and see what the AD has in the way of straps and try to decide from there.  Was the place in Paris ABP?  I've been looking at some of their straps but like you said it's hard to know if the color I see is the actual color.  I know I'll find something and almost anything will be better that what I have now. Thanks again for your help. Best regards, Tom

It wasn't ABP but I did get a dark blue strap from them, through their internet site, for my Lange Perpetual. It worked out all right but their was a lot of email discussion. The shop was called Antoine de Macedo and its in the St. Germain des Pres area. That one has their vintage pieces, repairs and straps. They have another place near there with new watches. But their website doesn't show any straps. They did have some beauties though. If you're in Paris I can give you a contact name but I'm sure most of the Loungers from the Paris area know about this shop. Good Luck And make sure you take your watch when you check out straps. If you're near a VC boutique, that would be ideal. Joseph
Thanks Joseph

That's great advice and I appreciate it.  The hard part about ABP is that it's hard to know if the color I'm seeing is the color I'll get; makes me nervous.

I would not suggest ordering from ABP unless you are in Paris, I've

ordered 3-4 straps from them and generally was not very satisfied with the result. I know that they have an excellent reputation and the majority of their custommers have had good experience but its better to be there in case you are not 100% happy.

Alex, Thanks for the heads up on that one; I appreciate it.   A friend of mine just ordered a strap from them and he hasn't gotten it yet but he like some other people I've spoken with had great things to say about them. I know you're not saying that they're not good, just that you've had problems.  I called them the other day and they were not very helpful over the phone so it already made me think twice and now you tell me of your experience and I think I need to be there if I get one from them. Do you know the best way to see the strap selection from VC? Best regards, Tom
the best would be to visit a VC AD or boutique if you have one in your

I prefer a dark chocolate brown strap to the reddish brown...

here's a scan to prove my point (pic from Alex): Forget the fact that the dial is black, the dark brown strap and the RG case combo is a match made in heaven! In fact, I love that strap color so much, I bought one for my Excellence Platine, in case I wanted to "dress it down". Having said that, I haven't changed yet the blue strap on my EP - the more I look at it, the more I like it.  The blue really goes well with the blued chrono hands. So I think you are right, the Malte Chrono, even in RG, would look pretty sweet with "blue shoes".  I say get both Cheers,  Francois

Now there's a solution I can live with.  The chocolate brown one does look fine.  Man, now I'm in a real quandry. Is the chocolate brown one and OEM strap and is it one of their standard colors?  Maybe I'll call VC today and chat with them about it. Thanks so much Francois for your input. Best regards, Tom
the chocolate brown is one of VC's standard colors :-) (nt)

rose gold with a burgundy strap can look really good too

This is a very beautiful watch Alex

When was it manufactured? I really love it, especially the lugs!
its from the late 40s, it has a 36mm case but looks bigger due to the

lack of bezzel.
Thanks! (nt)

WOW...that is beautiful.

Thanks Alex; that's a terrific combo as well and I've always liked burgundy straps and don't have any.  It's a lot to consider but it's all good. Best regards, Tom
Love rose gold!

I first got this watch with it's original but worn-out burgundy strap: And changed it for a new red-brown one: Have to admit I like them both!  But Alex, I absolutely love those crab lugs
