completing my vacheron thunderbird ( reference 6782) story....

in october last year, i started my story of the vacheron 6782 :

http://www.thehourlounge.com/index.php?module=Thread&action=view&threadid=39672&id=39672

it was sent to the VC spa after a day of ownership with the mission of "contemporarise" it so that it will realise its potential of a true modern classic status it deserves. an estimate of 53-55 weeks of spa service was quoted by VC geneva from mid nov 2009 after appraisal, so the expected date would coincide as a christmas present for myself.

the wait was so ardous and unbearable that the only way to soothe the pain was to forget that i even bought the watch.

a ring from the service centre today earmarked my lucky day as christmas comes early.

before showing the finished watch, let me share what i wanted VC to do and not to :
- keep my original dial
- keep my bezel, though not correct as it should be red-enamelled for the numerals on the bezel as i prefer the stealthier look
- change the hands which was peeled
- change the crown as it was tarnished
- change the leather to the size  and colour to the same as my VC 1755
- change the buckle to the same.
- change the lug pins to curve ones
- complete service of the movement to rejuvenate life

so here u are, my interpretation of a classic reborn, still valid after years of birth :

So many things to do on the watch renovation - - You have created an harmonious piece, an outcome better than the original.  What a pleasure to see.  Best wishes, Robert
i shouldn't take any credit. but we do need a nice painting...........

to start with for any worthy restoration.  what i really want to say is V&C watches are still valid today, not at all outdated, not meant to keep in a watch box because they are modern classics.

What a lovely watch !

Congrats, I love this special watch.  , so sporty, classy... Something quite unique in high end vintage watches.  Just a question about the magnifier? What are your thought about? Enjoy it! Francois
to me, the numerals on the date disc are legible, so the magnifier....

/cyclops is unimportant to me functionally. i also feel cyclops looks awkward and spoil the balance of the dial, that is why i did not asked for the change.
Congratulations on a beautifully restored piece!

Hi Aaron,  I'm very happy for you!  Through your posts, I know how long you've been waiting and how eager you've been to get it back.  It's terrific that you got an early Christmas! I don't expect to be sending my Thunderbird in until 2012 (I need to space my watches' service intervals so I can afford them and so I always have a couple of beauties with me while one is at the VC Spa - it makes the wait a bit more bearable ). I thought the magnifier/bubble over the date was no longer available, as DutchClock and others did not receive one when they sent their ref. 6782s in for restoration.  It's good to know that it might still be an option, I think I will ask for one when its my turn to restore - since it was there originally (also because any help for my eyes would be welcome). Best Regards, Dan
hi dan, good to see its mate in china territory! coincidentally i am..

in shanghai now for a furniture fair. so that probably makes 2 thunderbirds acrobating in the same sky.  yes, the cost of maintenence is high for watches, so i rarely service them unless justified. i am not sure whether the magnifier is available though because i did not ask for it and VC did not offer to change it.
Dial and case look great. How's it...
