Customs Problems

Hi

I seem to be having an inordinate number of problems with importing my newest watch - USA to Canada.

Does anyone have any advice on this front?

Hi Dave,

I guess the first thing is too understand what problems you are having.

You can do that by PM if you like.

Usually just wait it out, that is what I do, the amount of time something is in custom varies. Don't count the shipping time while it is in customs as a package can take 1 day or 7 days in the customs inspection. Also, only count business days (Monday to Friday) for anything, a lot of people that wait for packages could assume it will travel on the weekend, or that customs is open on the weekend.

In general it usually takes anywhere from 1 to 5 business days when you get the tracking update that the item is in Customs for inspection. (I usually order packages from 1 to 5 day delivery, and it is my experience that the 1 day packages clear faster vs 3 or even 10+ days). If you have to pay the taxes and handling fee on the value (I always declare the exact value as everyone should do) then expect to pay on average 21%, I've had items where I've only paid the tax and no handling fee (came out to 13%) and other times when the handling fee far exceeded the taxes, totalling my fee to 30% of the value of the timepiece, there is usually no general rule for handling fees.

I hope that helped a bit :)

Thank you for your detailed reply.

I guess it's like sending in 2 boxtops and $0.25 to a cereal company hoping to get a nuclear submarine - except this costs more. ;-)
