The dial designs that never made it

A lot of prototyping and tests are done before the final watch is released. Here are some examples of dials which were tested but will never see the day.

Malte Chronograph:

Toledo 1952:

Patrimony Contemporaine (left) Malte Tonneau Dual Time (right):

I like the two tone dial on the Patrimony Contemporaine here, shame it wasn't made.

Patrimony Contemporaine Bi-Retrograde:

Patrimony Traditionnelle:

Some beautiful alternatives could have been made!

I love the black dial of Malte chrono!

It's quite seldom to see prototypes!

Thank you for discovering some of them, Alex.

I like also the 2 tone dial for Patrimony.

The two-tone chrono...

I would have been curious to see

Very interesting, Alex...

that rare glimpse behind the scenes was a real treat!

Tony C.

Thanks! Glad they didn't go with those...

bi-retrograde designs here.... The design they chose is superbe and unusual whereas the designs shown here are just too much of the same old thing: dates on the outer track, retrograde days by 3 letters initials, "automatic" written on the dial... They almost look like a "". The small "12" doesn't look nice, the simple elegance of the Patrimony line is completely gone...

Compare with the chosen one: which one is memorable?

The colors though are not bad. I like the grey tones of the one on the bottom right.

Your right! The presentation of the days is totaly ugly

Absolutely agreed on...

The actual Bi-Retro dial is the best of them all.

But look at the Toledo and Malte Chronograph designs...

Some very intersting ideas here.

But whether one likes the dials that were eventually selected or not, the photos do illustrate the amount of work that goes into designing a new watch, a lot of brain-storming, second-guessing and wonderful artist creativity.

I'm sure everyone will have their own favourites from amongst the "rejects"

Thanks for a little look behind the scenes, Alex.

Whoaaa!! Some very nice designs!!

Thank you Alex for such an interesting post - I love all the alternate dials!

My favorite is by far the two tone RG/white Malte chrono dial: it would look really nice with a RG case and a brown strap!

WOOO!! ...

...somme are very nice, some are very ugly in my opinion.

The black dial for Malte Chronographe is a real beauty!

The dials with mother of pearl for the Tonneau Dual Time are very impressive and original, but I can't imagine it on the Tonneau case.

We have here some pieces for the HL LE Watch!!

In addtion, Alex, have you got somme good or bad news concerning the HL LE Watch?

For VC HL watch is a great idea but not yet! (nt)
