Longer Warranties for All New Watches!

Actually, I think all new watches from top brands should come with a three or four year mchanical warranty. They often cost as much as a car, and cars come with three to five year warranties even though they take much more abuse. It would introduce some needed discipline to the industry via economic consequences for poor design or workmanship.
I agree with you wholeheartedly

I have seen watch industry 'pundits' talk up the level of abuse watches get to justify why you should send hem in for a service every x years... Even claiming they get more abuse than a car because they are constantly working. Well, I think the jury might be out on the truth to that... But if my QP has parts that will only go round once in 4years, I think it reasonable that the manufacturer shoud warrant that that part will work correctly...and if it doesn't.... And they too often dont... They should demonstrate some ownership for it. Otherwise.... My recto would be to only buy a QP within 2 years of a Leap Year! G

As with all things, an extended warranty would probably be built into the price of the watch, but I agree that a 4 year warranty with pieces of complex micromechanics should be warranted (pun intended).
Not long ago watches had just a 1 year warranty but an EU regulation

requesting objects sold in Europe to have a 2 year warranty obliged watch brands to offer a 2 year warranty. I think that longer warranties would make sens and are a market trend

why not follow the automobile industry and lease our watches for a few years, then trade up!! Would improve the secondary market too, which appears to be a field that VC has interest in...
