The Only Watch auction is organised by Antiquorum and take place on Sept 22, 2011. The aim is to auction unique pieces, prototypes or n° of a limited series watches, the proceeds of which will go to the AMM, an association which funds research  against muscular dystrophies.

This year Vacheron Constantin's unique piece, inspired by Escher's drawings, merges different crafts such as guillochage, engraving, enamelling and gem setting.

Believe me the final result is pure poetry!

From the press release:

Dove watch – one-of-a-kind creation for Only Watch 2011

This model embodies an exceptional association of the famous Métiers d’Art cultivated within the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin: engraver, enameller, gemsetter and guillocher are working together to create this unique magnificent watch, especially developed for Only Watch. Inspired by the technique of repetitive tiling designs known as tessellation, this “Métiers d’Art – Perspectives d’Art” watch invites observers to explore a reality that plays with human perception.

This watch combines several of the Manufacture’s artistic crafts that vividly express the theme of perspective in order to accentuate the sense of depth, each according to its own technique. The watches gold, enamelled and diamond-set dial adopts concepts such as geometry, symbolism and motion, subtly nesting and layering them in order to generate several levels of meaning and interpretation.

This timepiece is inspired by a drawing by Maurits Cornelis Escher – a Dutch engraver and graphic artist (1898-1972) whose work was based on a subtle play on architecture, perspective and space. This one-of-a-kind creation depicts a flight of red and white doves – the Only Watch colours - born from the Métiers d’Art exercised within the Manufacture. These birds - symbols of hope and love - are exquisitely interlocking like jigsaw puzzle parts or tessellations, these skills combine in creating a truly stunning decorative motif. Within the case beats high-precision mechanical self-winding Vacheron Constantin Calibre 2460, bearing the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva. In addition to the extreme reliability of this entirely in-house developed and produced mechanism, it is adorned with exquisite hand finishes crafted in accordance with Geneva’s noblest Fine Watchmaking traditions.

I don't think it is possible to do better in this case, truly magnificent!! When I saw the pressphoto yesterday I couldn't wait to see in the flesh pictures of it. What an amazing dial, I can only imagine how many hours it took to complete!

Thank you Alex smiley

the dial took close to two months to complete!

FAN-TAS-TIC !

A great showpiece
07/01/2011 - 18:31

The piece is of course stunning and a work of art!  Considering the investment required for this special one-off project, are there plans to make similar designs available in another model?

Once more ...

a watch that shows the special skills of VC.

Formidable! Piece of art!! Love it!!!
07/02/2011 - 03:03

This is the most elegant, beautiful, unique and art deco influenced Vacheron&Constantin,

I ever seen in modern times!

I have to use the frase I really don't like,

because it's so missused,

but I'm stunned!

It's a break through.

This is something absolute outstanding.

This is Vacheron&Constantin!

Love it, want it, so please Alex or anyone else, make it disappear,

and make me find it somewhere smiley

Doc

Wonderful
07/02/2011 - 03:06

Only Vacheron could have made this watch. Too bad there's only one of them!

Just beautiful!
07/02/2011 - 04:37

As Alex mentioned, this is pure poetry!

This watch is so much fun to look at.  At first I saw the silver colored doves, then, upon closer look noticed that the red areas are also birds.  Of course I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were also white doves mixed in.  Wow! (Please forgive my poor description.  I too cannot find the right words).  What's more is that an even closer look reveals the fine detailing on the dial.

My second surprise was the automatic movement.  Well, I just assumed that they would be using the cal. 1003 with the maki-e case so I was taken off-guard by the photo of the cal.  So many surprises.

Kudos to everyone at VC and thanks to Alex.

Best regards,

Kazumidevil

Great watch for a great cause!

A masterpiece unique - a Vacheron for a good cause!
07/02/2011 - 11:35

I almost went for the one Vacheron made for the Only Watch auction two years ago - QdI Only Watch - that piece really rocked my boat, but in the end the bid exceeded my budgetcrying

This year's edition is a grand watch, a lot of effort and true workmanship has gone into its creation. But it's not me designwise.

My wife's first reaction: "Find out when it will be previewed near us"
07/02/2011 - 15:08

"I must see this watch in person!"  Enough said, don't you think?  wink

To be honest, I really didn't think much of this watch when I saw the small Press Release photo.  But I couldn't have done a faster 180 degree turn after seeing the close up pictures.  The details really make this watch the masterpiece that it is.

I'm not sure, but is the Cal 2460 SC used in any other watch besides this one and the CR 1907? (the CR has Cal 2460 SCC - I believe the only differences are the rotor and being COSC Chronometer certified).

Best Regards, Dan

cal 2460 is used amongst others in the World Time, the QDI annual

A truly amazing work of art, Alex!

This is really something else!  Many of the techiques of arts-metiers are brought together here to produce something not only unique but quite spectacular...impressionnante, formidable, eblouissante!

I would love to see it in "flesh"

BTW it looks as if there are not only doves there, but hummingbirds and cardinals too smileycheekyheartyes

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"  -  Different people will find different things beautiful and that the differences of opinion don't matter greatly.

This is 'ground-breaking' news from VacheronConstantin - an 'historic' announcement!  'The Dove' delivers awesome style in no small measure.

Congratulations to everyone involved.

It is my firm belief that what we are looking at some very exciting times ahead.

'Hold-on to your hat!'

I'm blown away!!!!!

I love this watch. Not only the dial but the smoothness of the case is a perfection. My only concern Alex, is that is seems to be a lady's watch and 40 mm diameter is really large for most ladies ! I aprciate the fact that it will be auctioned for a very good case.

I should always re-read my comments before sending ! ! !

interesting comments, its true that the dial may look feminine but
07/03/2011 - 22:57

I would say its more unisex and would look even on a male wrist, I tried it on and it looked pretty good....unless that was my feminine side expressing itself cheeky.

Its one of those watches which I would think the buyer would no wear...unfortunately

Masterpiece

Now that is stunning indeed ! Mesmerizing. And, less obvious compared with the dial, love those hands ! Thanks for sharing this live impression of a most impressive watch. Best, Mark
