Exclusive: SIHH 2016 Patrimony 42mm

from the press release

Patrimony, three new 42mm models

A new and more generous diameter for three platinum models in white and pink gold, bearing the Hallmark of Geneva.

While the formal purity of the Patrimony collection is highlighted by the refinement of the noble materials from which the watches are crafted, it is given a distinctly contemporary expression in an even more generous diameter. The three models interpreted in 42 mm versions elegantly assert the pure, restrained lines of the iconic Vacheron Constantin collection. Reflecting a minimalist design that combines taut lines with rounded curves in a pleasing aesthetic  balance, the new models presented at the SIHH 2016 come in 950 platinum, 18K white gold or 18K 5N pink gold.

In keeping with the Patrimony design codes, these models feature a broad opening framing understated dials that are slate grey for the platinum version and silver-toned for the white and pink gold models. Slightly convex on the external zone and adorned with a circular “pearl” minute-track, the restrained dial is enlivened by a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock.

The functions are driven by Caliber 4400 AS, a mechanical manual-winding movement developed and crafted in-house by Vacheron Constantin. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, it features all the hand finishes characteristic of Haute Horlogerie. All models bear the Hallmark of Geneva.

Mixed feelings. Is 42mm really needed? Has VC thought of updating

the manual wind Patrimony 40mm with the calibre 4400 but without seconds hand?

I believe the larger diameter was needed to allow for more tapering at the ends

Since cal. 4400 is a thicker movement compared to the petite cal. 1400, I would surmise that the designers needed the extra real estate to allow for more tapering toward the edges in order to achieve the same elegant aesthetics/lines as the old 40 mm version (i.e., to make the watch look thinner).

Although the new design with it's small seconds dial harks back to an old piece that was supposed to have inspired the current patrimony line, the "small movement in an oversized case syndrome"  casts it's ugly shadow once again, as evidenced by the small seconds dial being positioned "too close" to the center instead of occupying more of the space at 6 o'clock.  Of course, that is just my preference and others might find the current layout cleaner with all indexes remaining basically intact (and not made smaller to make way for the small seconds dial).

The increased size may be too big for smaller wrists too.  It would have been interesting to see the same design using the 1400 base caliber with small seconds in a 40mm case instead.

Sadly, by the time most of us can start collecting Vacheron, our eyesight isn't what it once was.  I appreciate the larger cases and have eliminated everything in my collection smaller than 40mm except for a competitors 39 mm.  I like the larger sizes in the 40-42mm range.  The VC Harmony dual time  I got last year is perfect for my 50 year old eyes.  Cannot wait to see the new models.

Replacement for 81180?

I hope VC wouldn't discontinue production of my favorite movement cal.1400.

However, this 42mm is as fascinating as former 40mm.

I will toast new baby of Patrimony family.

oh no! The 81180 remains in the catalogue and this 42mm is just an addition

Thank you, Alex.

I was relieved to hear that.

I love both 81180 and new 42mm.

Finally the right hands and the right caliber side but without the right case diameter... :-S

Also I feel like the seconds-track is in the wrong color, making it pop out too much, except for the platinum version... Am I the only one feeling like this?

Any other planned colors?
