Finally have a CR pocket watch....sort of

My dear wife was kind enough to let me pick my own birthday present heart

Finally have a CR pocket watch....sort of

This Ref. 3740 Chronometre Royal bronze desk watch is from 1938 and is sibling to the 3741 World Time version that we saw in the VC collection during SIHH 2011

Finally have a CR pocket watch....sort of

By the 1930s, the Chronometre Royal had ceased to be available as a pocket watch and wouldn't reappear until the wrist watch versions in 1953.

The wonderful 20-jewel 22 ligne movement has all the hallmarks of the CR including a cut bimetallic balance wheel with Breguet overcoil hairspring and sapphire endstone, and swan-neck fine regulator.

This particular one is marked as case Nr. 1, leading me to assume it was the first produced.  VC records are unable to confirm this or identify the case maker and there are no other markings to assist.

Of course you will recognize that the distinctive wood stand is absent!  Unfortunately that was not available but it has led to an interesting search.  A few blocks away from my home I found a member of the Wood Turner's Guild, the president actually.  Upon visiting his garage shop, complete with laser cutting maching and antique 6 ft. turning lathe side-by-side, I believe I have found the person to make a faithful recreation.  When he pulled out a large chunk of aged maple burl, we both became excited for the task.  He is currently making a prototype out of soft wood, using a 1:1 scale photograph of an original stand.  I promise to report back on the results cheeky.

Nice present from Mrs. Tick-Talk! Most CR PWs I know of have 18 jewels, I wonder if the 2 additional jewels in your movement are cap jewels for the pallet lever? BR, Dan. (posting from an IPad, which has limited formatting options for making posts)
Thats right Dan

I believe you are right; the upper and lower cap jewels for the pallet staff.  Here you can see the upper...
It's wonderful and as I wrote,

I once had one! Stupid as I was, I let it go, hope it's yours! I don't even find a pic. This was in my Maritime Chronometer episode, and all was about fusee... OTH, this IS beautiful! Congrats  Doc
Maritime theme...

This desk watch has been called a "helm" and "ship's wheel" style, so I guess there was a maritime theme in the design.  But as I understand, it was actually intended to be a store reference watch, like the Heure Exacte.  I can imagine the days before electronic clocks, cell phones and internet when people would routinely adjust their own watch while passing by a watch boutique.
what a fantastic find! the dial is gorgeous and can't wait to see the

we have a tradition...

of celebrating our birthdays for at least a week and up to a month.  This habit was started by my daughters and now I see the sense of it enlightened

Lovely, Dean! Maple burl would look stunning and you don't have to use the exact same stain either, if you want something a little different. Quater-sawn wood also has a very nice grain pattern. Congratulations1 Joseph
Several choices Joseph

I think my heart is set on the maple burl but the choice of finish is still open.  I'd like to ensure the color tone of the wood is complementary to the bronze case, which may require staining.  Then the clear coat, to be period, will likely be shellac instead of a modern varithane, etc.

Definitly a stain to match the bronze. Bare maple is off-white. You might want to consider "French polish" which is a shellac-alcohol mix. Very beautiful but very labour intensive requiring many coats and quite fragile to alcohol or water. But only the best for this masterpiece! Regards, Joseph
Superbe! Happy birthday

Dean , exquisite acquisition , can't wait to see the complete set ! ..

I speculate part of the joy of owning this one is reproducing the holder. It certainly adds to the joy of final ownership of the complete set.
Right on Aaron, thanks! nt
