Geneva Nov 15-16 Antiquorum and Sotheby's auction results

Habitually auction houses save their finest and rarest pieces for the November Geneva sales but the financial doldrums and the fact that there were close to 3000 watches being auctioned in 4 days could have left even the most optimistic observer a bit doubtful.  2 out of 4 auctions took place over the week end and confirmed what we had been seeing since the begining of auction season in Sept: the exceptional with impecable provenance sells very well and the rest does OK.

where in my sentence did you see me say the Mercator went for a

high price?
Indeed, the high estimation seems low and it went for not a high price
11/17/2008 - 17:22
the question is why so low or not very high? there is so much work there are not so many timepiece like that
the Mercator is a mystery to me. Its one of the most intelligent and

well thought out watches of its time and on top of it its extremely rare and even thoug depending the models it can go for a high price at auction it never oes through the roof. The problem with this model at Sotheby's could be that the dial was not interesting enough. The big spenders seem to be saving for the vintage pieces with a WOW factor which this particular watch probably did not have.
I think the map has to do with the price,

if it had been other versions like the first edition, over Europe and Africa or the limited German version, I'm sure the price had been a lot(!) higher. Just my 2 Crowns Doc
Is it the map?, is it VC?, is it the way to read (to original)? (nt)
