GTE 2014 cancelled!

Geneva Time Exhibition, which has run in conjunction with SIHH since 2010 to showcase the "independent" watchmakers, has cancelled the 2014 show, apparently due to a lack of registered exhibitors.  They've even pulled their website.

FWIW, I don't buy the argument that they were in direct competition with SIHH and suffered accordingly.  I found the atmosphere very different, informal and less chichi, and enjoyed getting close enough to smell coffee on the breath of some of the world's best boutique watchmakers, mixed with some oddball brands and wannabe start-ups for added flavor.

Well, what does this mean for the state of the watch industry, will they be missed?
I think the issue had to do with

organisation and many independent brands had decided to rent out hotel suites to showcase their watches
I'm sad to hear about this

It was nice and convenient to be able to meet and see some of the smaller players in the industry all at the same location. It will be more targeted visits to the hotels, and less chance for a serendipitous find.  If organization get better, any chances of GTE coming back in 2015?  Or has the die been cast and no way of going back? I agree Dan, I had a wonderful chat with the people from Reuge who were there last year. Rgey had some beautiful examples of their music boxes to look at. Perhaps the cost and poor sales commitments played a role as well. It's probably a lot cheaper to rent an hotel suite and send out emails or letters to prospective clients.
I agree JB about the cost-effectiveness of it

I've done some work with Exhibitors at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas and it is the same thing...with some companies preferring to rent a hotel room instead of convention center space...and for many of the same reasons. BR, Dan
