Interview of JC Torres, CEO oF VC on the Geneva Grand Prix Award

Between the numerous interviews he has been giving since Vacheron's Quai de l'Ile won the Best Men's Watch award at the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix last night Juan-Carlos Torres took some time to share with the Loungers his thought on this prize.

Interview of JC Torres, CEO oF VC on the Geneva Grand Prix Award

What does winning the Geneva Watchmaking Grand prix represent for Vacheron Constantin?
It is the recognition of our peers of Vacheron Constantin’s innovative spirit merged with over 250 years of know how.

Is this prize a plus for the Quai de l’Ile in these times of economic turmoil?
We don’t adapt our watches for times of crisis. The Quai de l’Ile is an integral part of our collection which is here to stay and like all products it will traverse times of crisis and economic vigor. Look at our extra flat model which dates from 1955; it has gone through times of trouble in its 50 year history and its still here because it appeals to a certain clientele. The same is true for the Quai de l’Ile which owes its success to the modification of the perception of customers of perceived value and real value.

What do you think the jury wanted to award?

I think the jury wanted to award our audacity, even though such audacity goes hand in hand with horological tradition. Look at the Quai de l’Ile, the whole watch evolves around a central heart under the limelight which is the movement. I think the jury was receptive to the fact that the Quai de l’Ile is not a gimmick but an intelligent product merging high craftsmanship and engineering.

Will this award push you to launch more innovative and audacious designs?

We are a brand who likes to explore new territories but we do so on our grounds which are those of classical and timeless watches. We are a generalist brand and our different lines should not cannibalise each other. Just because the Quai de l’Ile is a very contemporary watch with an audacious and bold design we will not all of a sudden modify our whole product range. Quai de l’Ile is an integral part of our collection line and we wish to have a wide offer to give a large choice to our clients.

Nothing to add to JC Torres !

It's a very short & concentrated interview. I notice especially : "We don’t adapt our watches for times of crisis." And also about the extra flat "it has gone through times of trouble in its  50 year history and its still here because it appeals to a certain clientele." The last is what I been repeating, exclusive works by Vacheron Constantin, don't get hurt by the economical climate, as other more common watches does. The persons who want this kind of watchmaking art, buy them when they want, and are not influenced by the stocket market Thanks Mr Torres Alex for the interview, and big congratulations for winning the prize Cheers Doc
