Introducing my newly arrived vintage 4072 chronograph

I have always been a huge fan of vintage VC chronographs, they have the allure of an old world charm which offerings from other brands don't have for me, a je ne sais quoi which makes my heart beat a bit faster.

The ref 4072 with its straight lugs and small case (34mm) seems to be overshadowed by the better known ref 4178 featuring the iconic tear drop lugs and larger 36mm case but surprisingly this is a model launched in 1938 and in production until the early 70s (for more info on the VC vintage chronographs History of Vacheron Constantin wrist chronographs Part 1)

Many years ago I had bought a 4072 with a lovely salomon dial but unfortunately the dial was redone

Introducing my newly arrived vintage 4072 chronograph

I recently had the opportunity to acquire a yellow gold model with original dial and icing on the cake...it had a pulsometer scale!

So without further ado here are some quick shots of my latest beauty

I love the pulsometer dial as well.  This color dial makes it really "pop" to me, so it looks more legible to me. I'm a little disppointed that you were holding out on us just a couple of weeks ago, where we could of seen this in the metal!  angry But your going to have to show it to us eventually, angel Congratulations on a great time piece. BR, Dan
It actually arrived the day you left SIHH!!

Ah, that is a phenomenal catch
02/03/2014 - 15:42
I love the dial.  The two-tone color scheme, the long slender stick and Roman indices, the sub-dials spaced nicely far apart.  The dial is just so crisp and fresh looking.  I would love  see some comparison side-by-side photos with the 4178... Best, Robert
the dial was the deal maker! Will take photos side by side with 4178

02/03/2014 - 17:33
Congratulations, Alex, you've captured a real "grail" piece heart.  The dial is a study in itself; I can see three different finish textures!  Is the crown original?  I really love the meaty size of it, suitable for a proper manual winding watch.  Also, did you happen to discover how many of the cal. 434 or 492 chronos were made with pulsations dials?
the dial is amazing! I don't know about the crown but it doesn't look
02/04/2014 - 10:15
out of place but will need to take it to the Heritage dept for inspection. Unfortunately I don't have the info re numbers made but pulsometers were rare. The rarest dials beingthose with respirometer AND pulsometer!
This a beautiful watch... but that dial... ! THAT DIAL !!!!

Alex, this beautiful vintage 4027 chronograph is 'up my street'. It says volumes in the nicest possible wayheart... Now then, a word about the photographs is called for. You have captured the warmth of character in no small measure. I 'take my hat off to you' for some exceeedinly good results. You've had a few requests for an 'inside job' - I look forward to seeing those results too. Happy moments have started and they promise to continue...  Regards Tony

Alex, allow me to be only the twenty-first to offer my heartfelt congratulations on your reference 4072! I admit that I was a little confused by the line, "Many years ago I had bought a 4072 with a lovely salomon dial but unfortunately the dial was redone" and went back through the Recommended Threads section until I found what triggered my memory: http://www.thehourlounge.com/index.php?module=Thread&action=viewEntire&threadid=76596. Similar situation regarding redone dials, no? And similarly fantastic ending to the tale, though the story of this acquisition may in fact not be as colourful as that of the 4178 more than two years previously. Almost everything I want to say about your watch has been said, more eloquently, by my colleagues above, particularly cisco (who correctly predicted the reveal with his post, "Did you dial 4 - 0 - 7 - 2 for emergency horological needs?") and tony chance, amongst others, but I just wanted you to know that I sit here in front of my iPad in sheer wonder at your find. As LN so aptly proclaimed, it is indeed magnificent!
thank you sir! I have been fortunate as in the past couple of years I
02/04/2014 - 10:22
have had the good fortune to have access to some chronos with amazing original dialssmiley
Just a slice of pure Heaven. You are so lucky!
02/04/2014 - 02:32
And deserving I might ad! Best to you all, Tim
Thank you for the kind words Tim :-)

Classic!
02/04/2014 - 12:03
I much prefer the Roman numerals on this new 4072 compared to the Arabic figures on the salmon-dialed one. I do wish your amazing egg-timer had been my own but since it's adoring your wrist may it time only well-boiled eggsyes and not a single skipped heart-beatwink
now that you're considering watches under 40mm you may surprise

us all next year with a vintage VC?!

Holy grail! The color looks like honey
02/06/2014 - 11:48
Or is this just desaturation in photoshop? Anyway, looks stunning. Would anyone consider a vintage VC as a daily wear/signature watch? Especially an ultra thin, aren't these pieces just rather fragile sunday watches? Congrats! Csaba
you are correct the yellow gold is honey colored. As for daily
02/06/2014 - 11:53
wear I very often wear my vintage watches but then again I have an office job so little harm can be done!

Big thank you, I've been hesitating to go for a vintage ultra thin, that could be a good entry for VC, but you have persuaded me! Regards, Csaba
