Is it just about a smiley face?

Here is a link to a short article in The New York Times about the "10:10" practice for displaying watches in advertisements:  Why Time Stands Still for Watchmakers

Thanks for the Link (nt)

Thanks Duncan for the link. I'm really fond of the last sentence: “Watch geeks are interesting people,” Mr. Sandler said. “They’ll pick up on weird stuff like that from an ad.”
I would also agree...

I remember the time when there was a discussion on a forum about my belt buckle, which was a VC half Maltese cross, that I wore at an event.  Frankly, it seemed a little bizarre to me when I was reading about men paying so much attention to my belt buckle... Cheers, Duncan

It's an amusing fact... which I had never noticed before. VC does it too: Although their American isn't really smiling... they should have put the time at 9:05
Well Francois, maybe the VC 1921 American is...

winking at us with its tilted face...   It knows it is special and just trying to reinforce that impression. Cheers, Duncan
A funny and new explanation,

but the real truth is that it's both symmetrical, but most of all the watchmakers name is shown  Cheers Doc
In the end, I agree with you Doc...

that it is mostly about marketing. Cheers, Duncan
There is more than one way to make a smiley face?

Thanks Duncan, for that interting read. But whatever happened to 1:50 as a time (hands reversed)? Is it more esthetic to have the longer hand on the right or is that just a conceit of right-handers? Regards, Joseph
Definitely the conceit of right-handers...

When will this oppression of the Lefties stop?!?
There have probably been millions of dollars spent...
11/29/2008 - 01:21
on market research and analysis by Harvard and London School of Economics MBA grads that led to the choice of 10:10 over 1:50/2:50.  Personally, I think that is money that could have been much better spent on something else, like perhaps a watch... I will leave it to the so-called experts to continue with the explanations. Cheers, Duncan
Thanks Duncan ... artcile scrapbooked ^^ (nt)
