05/14/2012 - 23:51
What do you need morality or mortality for that matter if you have a grail of this caliber? ;-))) Cheers Dean!
Ah Radek, I know your weakness...
05/15/2012 - 06:16
and its not for watches, but rather beautiful daughters heart.  Thank-you for the kind wish,  my friend!
Very nice result for a beautiful watch but ...
05/14/2012 - 14:47
This sale was ... strange.. Some Vacheron did above its high estimate, it is the beautiful late triple date with the vintage caliber, a good but at a normal price imho. The same for the beautiful Saltarello in white gold. This is normal and everything is fine for these Vacheron BUT If you look at Jaeger Results or some Patek in white metal (only), they skyrocketed, doubling the high estimate, there is here no more passion but a lot of speculation. At the same time other patek in yellow or pink gold didn't sell even with nice black dial. And through a collector I thank (merci Christophe !), I know that there is an investment fund in watches: where does he invests: Patek in white metal and JLC... the guy did some very surprising bid at Artcurial JLC auction (Geophysic at 30k€, and again a Geophysic here get this price). And as a consequence this guy have to create a bubble to make the fund interesting. Sorry to put that here, but the is just pure speculation and that's a very bad sign for our passion, I hope that this won't affect Vacheron (the fund has some of VC in its "portfolio"). For this beautiful enamel Vacheron I suppose it is NOT speculation as pocket watches are normally not affected by this, but still it is strange to have such a result. Sorry to put that here Alex, but people should be aware of that. This is very bad news for what is a passion and should stay so, I am quite worried.
flippers, speculators and dealers have always been in this market and
05/14/2012 - 15:41
always will. In fact up until very recently the vintage watch auctions were basically all amongst dealers. Just look at the Christie's and Sotheby's  catalogues of just ten years ago and you'lle see that the quality was such that the auctions were catering to dealesr and not collectors. Today there are 2 investment funds with watches in their portfolio but they don't drive the prices up by themselves and need someone to bid against and that's where we can really see the shifting of the market to Asia. The number of bidders from HK, Taiwan and mainland China are going up and up and Japan is back on track. I wouldn't be surprised that this watch is now either in Taiwan or HK.
Thanks for your insight Alex

I don't know if they drive it but they put some watches in a very speculative direction (steel Patek for example), which is not the case for other watches. It was maybe the case some years ago but the proportion it is taking is dangerous imho.
