looks like the Chronographe Historique is getting really hot

On June 13 (Sotheby's) and June 14 (Antiquorum) in New York were held the last auctions of the season. Whereas most of the VCs on aution did well without being extraordinary the Antiquorum auction held some nice surprises the biggest being the sale price of a platinum Chronographe Historique.

Lot 38  was estimated at between $15,000-$20,000 and it more than doubled its low estimate selling for a whopping $34,200! Another platinum Chronograph Historique had sold in May in Christie's Geneva auction for $29,600! The next sales will let us have a clearer idea as whether this is a trend or one off results. It does seem however that collectors are more and more attracted to this piece with its beautiful proprtions, fantastic movement and prestegious brand name.

Other interesting lots at the Antiquorum auction were two tourbillons depicting VCs undisputed skeletonising talents

lot 203 Tourbillon Malte Squelette (current production) Estimated at $90,000 - $120,000 sold for $123,150

Imho the finest dress-chrono around.

The skeleton tourbillion doesn't look bad either..

Lot 268 skeleton tourbillion is one of my favorites (of which there are many).

I wish VC would come up with a new simple skeleton watch in a more contemorary size (37-38mm).  Maybe VC can have one in the traditionelle line up to complement the new skeleton perpetual calendar (something a mere mortal like myself might be able to afford).  Although the 1120 is always welcome, I would like to see if the new VC cal. 2450 series would lend itself to skeletonizing too.

Just dreaming out loud

I still kick myself for not buying a Chrono Historique

I once put one on my wrist at a New York AD, but being new to haute horology, I thought the case was too thick.  What a mistake that was.  Now I even own a Panerai.  Every time I see someone post a scan of the movement in this watch I gasp at the stunning workmanship.  And those lugs!  Plus looking back, at the time this watch was available at the ADs, it was probably the best buy in the store.

Do you think possible that this trend could extend to other Historiques models with teardrop lugs, etc.?

I think that the new success of the Chronographe Historique on the

secondary markets is due mainly from the fact that it is a very rare piece in all aspects: how many elegant platinum chronographs with such a beautiful movement exist on the market? Very few. Add a prestegious name on the dial and how many are left? even less!

As for the trend extending to other Historique models I don't know. Prices will certainly continue rising but not in the same proportions as what we have seen for the vintage and modern chronographs or the more complicated or original pieces.

What is rather new here is the increase in prices for modern VCs may it be this chronograph or the Jubile 1755 which is going for or above list. I'm still waiting to see the prices of some of the really rare pieces like the Tour de l'Ile or the Saint Gervais...
