Where do you plug in the earphones? That thing looks like an old grundig AM/FM/SW receiver. Regards, Joseph
Alex, I must admit my surprise...
08/16/2008 - 10:15
as I did not expect you to be a MB&F fan.  Of course, we all appreciate a wide variety of watches and brands and VC to MB&F covers a very broad spectrum.  Perhaps similar to our mutual friend, a Patek moderator who also enjoys Richard Mille... Duncan
I have more surprises in stock...
08/16/2008 - 15:13
not only do I love what Max Büsser has been doing since his days at Harry Winston (and the HM-3) is all the way on top of my wish list I am a huge fan of the independents with alternative designs such as Urwerk and Vianney Halter. Surprisingly VC is the only "brand" I collect, my other watches are from independents!
I guess that I am more of a "brand" guy...
08/17/2008 - 01:39
as I also have a strong affinity for AP and Lange in addition to VC.  As for the more independent oriented guys, I am definitely a fan of Richard Mille and his timepieces.  Got bit by the Urwerk bug, but don't have a real emotional attachment to the watch... In general, I would have to say that my preference is for more traditionally designed pieces.  Maybe I just fall back to the basics of telling time as I was taught when I was a child.  The small hand tells you the hours and the big hand tells you the minutes.  That is hard enough for a simpleton like me. Duncan
I think it was W.C. Fields who said: "Children are like Elephants, I
08/17/2008 - 17:16
like looking at them but don't want any in my house!" Well not pushing it to such limits I have respect for many brands (Lange immediately jumps to mind) but they lack the je ne sais quoi which independents have which make my heart beat faster and push me to part with my hard earned cash . You can rightfully tell me that VC is also a brand, but for me they still have that little "spark" which independents have...at least to me. This "spark" is definately identifiable in their vintage pieces but somehow disappeard IMHO from the 70s-2000s and is now back.
The great thing about collecting watches is...
08/18/2008 - 01:13
that there is literally something for everyone.  This is a hobby which can cater to the tastes and preferences of all who are interested.  As our likes and dislikes evolve and our collecting habits develop, I also think we have the opportunity to learn about ourselves as well.  What a great hobby! Cheers, Duncan P.S. As I do not have children, nor do I have any elephants, I will just have to make do with a few nice watches in the house.
I would gladly let you keep my kids for a while in exchange of your

watches
Hahaha! While I have been known to share my watches,
08/18/2008 - 12:13
I think I'll stick with timepieces as they are less work and require less maintenance than kids.  Also, you can stop/silence a repeater or a sonnerie but try doing that with a baby... Sorry Alex, no deal on this one. Duncan
I'm offering you 2 Grand Complications and you don't pick up the

offer? What's the world comming to?
Well, these days, I am enjoying and have a preference for...
08/18/2008 - 15:27
simple watches ala Chronometre Royal. I get nervous handling those Grande Complications.  In fact, I dug out some instructions this afternoon when I was playing with a certain chiming watch. Besides, I would not want to deprive you of all of the joys of parenthood. Duncan
oooh...would love to see scans of said chiming watch :-) (nt)

Come on Duncan, let's see or better yet hear it. After-all, you can only kill me once! Best, Miki

Alas. I don't have any pics and besides...
08/19/2008 - 01:41
it is not a VC.  I am still waiting to find my perfect VC repeater or perhaps even better yet, a sonnerie.  Duncan
no problem posting scans of watches by

other brands...I do it all the time!
Yeah, but then I need to dig out the camera and take my usual

crappy pics.  I think you should just come to Singapore... Duncan
that's tempting :-) (nt)

Come on over!
08/20/2008 - 02:16
We have nice warm weather, wonderful food and perhaps the best watch community outside of Geneva with a truly amazing collection of timepieces in a country that is not much larger than a postage stamp.  Good friends complete the picture and you can probably see why I have ended up staying here. Cheers, Duncan P.S. Alex, is there a way to extend the number of posts displayed per page?  As the Lounge grows in popularity and with longer threads, it might make the experience a bit more user friendly if one does not have to click "Next Page" quite so frequently.  Ideally, this would be user/member controlled but I do not want to ask for too much.   Thsnks!
Very soon... regarding the number of posts per page I
08/20/2008 - 12:12
had asked the tech people about this when HL was launched and they told me that the graphics quality would be affected by having more posts per page. However you are right and it would be much better to have more posts per page. I will ask again
Thanks Alex.
08/20/2008 - 14:36
Not sure how or why the graphics quality would be affected since they are probably just changing a variable for the number of items displayed and not really the position or resolution of the graphics on the page.  Of course, their might be some "unique" architecture being used by those techies... Thanks for trying your best for us. Duncan
