Metiers d'Art - Dragons. Guillochage like you have never seen

Following the enamel thread  below and Bill's request here's a short presentation of the Matiers d'Art - Dragons. Made in 2010 in 3 different dials of 9 pieces each.

The idea behind these watches was to create guilloche dials like never seen before.

Guillochage is made by cutting patters into a metal dial, two types of patters can be drawn: lines (horizontal and vertical) and semi circular. BUT Vacheron Constantin has a guilloche artist which is not an artisan but a sorcerer straight out of Hogwarts!

He can actually make drawings using engine turning tools which absolutely are not made for this! Imagine trying to put a thread in a needle head using boxing gloves and saying the alphabet backwards... well its probably easier than making these Dragon dials!

Once the dial is guilloche the coloring process begings, the undergoes different galvanic baths - only the parts to be colored are in contact with the special bath and therefore the other parts need to be protected suing a special film.

Vacheron Constantin is the only brand using this technique!!! It takes about 2 weeks to make a dial and the final result is nothing short of amazing.

and it seems that he has taken his artistry to an even higher level with the M.C Escher dials with this year's novelties. The fish dial is amazing. Bill

Hi Alex, How about a word or two with Julien about a "small" book on the on the history of Vacheron guillochage. Its one aspect that has never been covered in depth and really deserves it. There are all the patterns (regular); the new recent works, the tools, the difficulties nd chllenges, the individuals involved etc. It would make an interesting read. Then you could follow it by a book on engraving work in watch movements and dials etc. Just a thought.... :-) Joseph
Don't know about a book but great material for a series of articles
