Minute Repeater Exhibition at VC's Shanghai Mansion

VC is conducting a traveling "Sound of Time" Exhibit this month in China (covering 3 cities: Nanjing, Tianjin, and Shanghai).  This will be be similar to the "Sound of Time" Exihbit that was first seen at Watches & Wonders 2013 and SIHH 2014.

In conjunction, the VC Mansion in Shanghai is holding an additional exhibit of 16 beautiful, thin, minute repeaters until the end of Sept. 2014.

I had a chance to take a few pictures yesterday (need I say I was a happy Lounger?):

This minute repeater pocket watch from 1904 is pretty cute, because it is only about 30mm in diameter!

This pocket watch from 1830 reminds me of the new cal 1731.  The seconds hand on this vintage watch is at the 4 o’clock position, while the new cal 1731 has the seconds hand at the 8 o’clock position.

This is the first time I’ve ever seen a legitimate, gold plated, VC!  Made in 1897, the case is gilt brass.  I wonder how it sounds with a brass case?

This will probably be the only time I get a chance to wear such a beautiful minute repeater, perpetual calendar!

If needed, I'd find a way to live without the perpetual calendar:

really amazing watches thanks for sharing dan, but I don't understand how

you managed to give the repeater QP back and not make a run for it cheeky

The team at Twin Villas knows me too well.

They closed the door to the exhibit room (and I think even locked it) while I was in there.  cheeky

OMG, what a collection!

Can't get enough of those beauties heart.  Thanks for taking these pics, Dan!  Someday I hope the Heritage Dept creates a video of each repeater in their collection, with sound, showing the repeating works in motion.  I'd love to know more about the 1816 piece described as "music repeater (chime)", it really strikes a chord wink.

I'll see if I can visit again next month and find out more about it. (nt)

Dan, with that iconic piece on your wrist, you should have fled.
08/06/2014 - 18:12

Thanks for sharing.

Each piece is timeless and achingly beautiful.  The simplicity and beauty of these dials from years ago is just awesome.  And that spirit and tradition is still alive today with VC.

Thanks for sharing. Do they have the 1731 in the same exhibition?

Its like all of a sudden VC has this new mojo and confidence, and exhibitions like this only increase awareness of the brand and value at auctions.  And I personally feel that both you and Alex have a huge part to play in this transformation.

WOW, thanks Kunal!

Thanks Dan, for sharing your visit.

Those are outstang pieces! An incredible show.

That one on your wrist looks like a keeper cheeky

Best,

Joseph

I thought it was a keeper too

But I think I would need to bring my camping equipment and live in their vault indefinitely for it to stay on my wrist.  smiley

Wow... just breathtaking

At first, I thought this was Joseph's personal collection.  Then I read the text of the discussion wink

I actually am completely in love with the 1943 Wristwatch.  That is absolutely beautiful.

Probably my other favorite is the 1899 Day/Date Pocketwatch.  They are all amazing, but that one struck me as just a little different with the Day/Date display.

I will say that I was surprised that the 1958 Pocket (with the crown at 3 o'clock) still has it's time set at 10:10.  Since it hangs 90 degrees offset, it seems 1:25 would have been a better time to display it with.

a couple of guesses
08/07/2014 - 02:11

1. These watches were set before arriving in China, and they did not know that these stands (that hang pocket watches by there loop) were going to be used.  I've seen other pocket watches Exhibited at the Shanghai Mansion using small, clear, acrylic stands before - where these hunter cased watches would be not have the 90 degrees offset.

2. Maybe it was thought that framing the name on the watch was still a better aesthetic, even with the offset?

Absolute treasures...

Dan, a word of thanks for taking the time to capture such wonderful pieces. I make no apology for praising your photographic skills too!...yes

Thank you again for the visuals...

Regards

Tony

I'm just very thankful that the team at the Maison

allowed me to take photos of each watch outside of their disply cases.  This is what they look like when exhbited:

Thanks for taking the time, Dan and it look as though you had a good time. What a lot of stunning repeaters with and without complications and showing all kinds of different case and dial designs. It must have been pure agony to take the ref 30020 of your arm. It seems to be a perfect size for you. I have added a photo of a cousin to the quarter repeater from 1830. My V&C quarter repeater is also from 1830 but it is 43 mm. All the best, Kent.  TESSST
An AMAZING dial Kent
