My AD has the tantalum/palladium QDL LE

I got the pleasure of examining this watch and its fascinating metal combination the other day--apologies, had no camera or even a phone. I was pretty moved by this watch. It's one of the cooler more modern pieces of work coming out of the conservative Swiss world these days (I think of VC as a conservative brand with avant garde designs, depending...) and I went home obsessed with the piece. Should I buy it??? Or is this 'only' a great, amazing novelty, marketed masterfully, etc, etc... The bluish tantalum CROWN alone is almost enough to send you over the edge. I could marvel at that for a lifetime, on and off... I have to say I'm not 100% sold on the palladium for the case, which essentially results in the look of palladium lugs, mainly--from the top view, anyway. I almost wished it was entirely tantalum, but then noooooo. The combination does have visual merits, and is at the height of avante garde 'ingredients' as of today... The domed crystal: heaven. Love it. the dark gray dial with new darker gray hands: love it. The Idea of the QDL, it's brave design, it's bloodline: love it.

It's not a cheap watch, though is it? :)

A few years ago, I'd already be wearing it, but I am more 'ma-tour' these days... novelties have worn off in a matter of days... OFTEN!

This one is very special. So I put it tou, gents, true connoisseurs of VC.

Is this watch a mere novelty done at the highest level--or is this a watch that sticks with you. grpws more meaningful, not less.

I could go on...

Maybe we'll get lucky and have some pics added to this thread, as I stillhave no idea how to post pics on this great site--I am on a Mac, and I think Alex said Macs can't post pics here?

Many thanks, and looking forward to the topic at hand.
Oh, and... (since I don't know how to edit on this site...)

I'm also unsure about the writing on the dial... can the message on the dial be printed here in full? What exactly does it say? If I owned the watch, the verbal message will have to mean something to me, too. :) Thanks!
I LOOOOOOOVVEEE this watch, the grey/blue color of the case

is just awsome. Already the QDI is one of my favorite watches (and probably the one that has been getting the most wrist time in the past 6-7 months) because it has the classical appeal of an extremely well made watch with a touch of contemporary design, but the tantalum version is even more desirable IMHO and if I had the funds I would have picked it up in no time! The writing on the dial is an extract, translated into English, of a letter sent from Italy by François Constantin in July 1819. This is right at the beginning of Vacheron and Constantin’s partnership:  "With your able assistance, I promise you that we will make as much from watchmaking as all the commercial travellers together.... I assure you that we will be strong: our watchmaking is highly esteemed here, by continuing to do better if possible and that is always possible."

Here's an article I had done on the QDI: click here to read the article to upload photos click on the sun/mountain icon on the left of the Smiley the 2 scans courtesy of Ishan:

I'll be making a decision in the next couple weeks... I'll keep 'visiting' the LE...  Appreciate the answers and feedback very much!
I also saw the watch "in the metal" in Las Vegas a few weeks back

...and what a magnificent piece! Having said that, I think I still prefer the palladium version with the silver hands... If I had the means, I would definitely have on my wrist a QdI (especially since my 47212 is about to go to the spa...) Cheers, Francois

I have had it for just around 3 months and it keeps on getting better and better.. from the details of the tantalum to the blueish crown you mentioned, it was my first VC and has made me more and more attracted to the brand.. It is a very exclusive piece that can be worn every day, and as you know, the grey strap and unique material makes it look really attractive... if you can afford it, go for it, you wont regret it
