My last recent purchase!

As we are on a special day (it happens every 4 years, except in 2100, but it will still take some time), I wanted to share my last acquisition from ... a gentleman.

It's a 3 hand simple watch, with tear drop lugs (typically VC)

Dial is guilloché with star indexes

Caliber is P453.

My last recent purchase!

My last recent purchase!

My last recent purchase!

For the history, this watch was exactly made in 1950, and purchased in Geneva.

I have no further details about it.

Maybe Doc, you can ask for more details if VC has some others...

Cheers

I have the same problem when I posted it. I saw every pic during writing my post, and they were switched off when sent.

I hope Alex can bring help.

Beautiful timepiece, enjoy for many years! (nt)

That is a lovely piece you have there.  The teardrop lugs are to die for.

Wear it in good health!

Thank you my dear Kazumi.

The lugs bring so much opening on the watch, that in fact, it fits well on your wrist with a feeling of having a bigger watch!

Lovely watch, congratulations. I love the different guilloched patterns and the tear-drop lugs. Wear it in good health! Joseph

Thank you Joseph.

VC is an expert in guilloché, and here, there are 2 kinds, which is wonderful. I'm happy with this.

Beautiful watch!

I love the big cal. 453 movement and the large teardrop lug case. The sound is mesmerising, to listen to it tick away. I've heard of that pattern called a "tuxedo dial" I guess because of the formality. Star indices are rare.

you're a lucky man anka :-) Love those star indices, may it time only

Thank you Alex.

I was sure you could only love it!

The mixture of different guilloché on the dial, with star indexes is outstanding!

That's right for hearing ticking it!

What do you mean by "tuxedo dial"? This word looks familiar to me, but I cannot remind from where.

Re: Beautiful watch
03/02/2008 - 17:52

A tuxedo, is a very formal men's suit, as worn to a fancy dress ball. In this case it is used as a descriptive term to connote the formality of the design. Vertical stripes are seen as being regal and formal, hence the term "tuxedo dial". It's not an official term, just a reference that is common in some areas.

Anka , in French a tuxedo is called a smoking (nt)

.

WOW !
03/01/2008 - 12:08

It's a classic in super condition. The dial with these stars is just so 50's that it's hard to beat

Apparently they were looking at the big country in east, when they put the stars there.

Getting more, than exact year, is hard on those watches since even if they didn't make more than perhaps 30-100 over some years, they were mostly exported from Switzerland.

I have tried to get information about watches from this time,

and also on some from the 30's that were made in quite small series,

but it's rather seldom that VC have any further info.

For instance, this, which VC Museum was bidding on, but I luckily won,

they can only tell the year, and it's from 1938

Congrats Patrice, wear it in health

Doc

Thank you for your words Doc.

Your information from VC are important, and it's a pity not to have more.

To create a story (or history) around our beauties is somewhat important as it's part of the watch and VC...

Anyway, I'm happy with it and to share it with you.

Best regards    Patrice

Congratulation!

It would have been a great opportunity, but unfortunately, I could not assist.

Next time, LN.

See you soon.

Hi anka

I did some checking since I thought I saw the watch before in one of my references.

I believe it is a Ref 4217 or 4219.

I use these numbers since the 4218 is identical except that it has a sweep second hand rather than a small sub dial like yours.

Vacheron often made 2 versions of a watch identical except for the second s hand. your movement is the 453 as you state. The 4218 had the p454 which used the sweep hand.

Otherwise everything is the same, dial lugs crown. These watches come from around 1952.

The 4218 appears in "The Art of Vacheron -Constantin" from 1994 Number 258

Best Wishes,

Joseph

Thank you for your information which are useful and of interest for me.

First, I did not know the reference number: I did not even think of that!

For the period, I'm sure it's from 1950 as I asked VC who stated it, in relation with case and mouvement figures.

Is it possible for you to send pics from the book (number 258) for my own litterature?

Thank you

Cheers, Patrice

Here you are, Patrice,

You can also find it on the Antiquorum website by doing a search of all their catalogues and the keywords " Vacheron 1952"

There are 6 pages and I think its near the end. They're displayed chronologically by date of sale with the most recent first.

Regards,

Joseph

Thank you Joseph for your time and research.

Bernard, I'm sorry you cannot watch my pics. I discussed this matter with Alex, as some of us have this trouble!

He will see how the webmaster could handle it.

Anyway, in the meantime, Alex uploaded my pics as another post. And this time, you can see them.

Hope you will appreciate.

Cheers, Patrice

Congrats Patrice

My reply is a little bit late, but I hope you'll be able to read it...

The watch is really beautiful; the lugs and the hour markers make it a really distinctive piece!

Wear it in  good health!

Cheers,

Veillotron

A simple nice watch...
