My SIHH pics : focus on the Quai de l'ïle

I had the opportunity to visit the SIHH and of course, I couldn't miss the VC booth !

I would like to make a focus on the Quai de l'ïle because it's a new concept in the horology industry, at least for watches of this range of price.

This pic gives you an idea of the different combinations available :

The watches :

automatic with date (caliber 2450)

automatic with date, day and power reserve (caliber 2475)

So I started to build my own watch with this software :

I'm proud of the result !

2 straps are available : leather of rubber strap.

And a passport will also be provided !

So the question is : is this a GOOD idea or a BAD idea ?

I must confess at the beginning I was really attracted by it. We all dream getting our OWN and ONLY watch. And I really enjoyed to build it : the number of combinations is so high !

But we are in the high end watches segment. In this segment, as a customer, may be I expect a finished product, a product which reassures me. There is something strange at the end to build a 20K euros watch with a software like a pair of shoes.

Other point : the watches in theirselves.

The finishings are great and I really love the dials.

But I don't know if they are dress watches or sportive watches. They don't belong in any category. So if I want to buy a dress watch, I buy "a classic" Vacheron. If I want to buy a more sportive watch, maybe I buy an Overseas.

In fact, I feel that the case is a bit too massive, it's the reason why I think that the watch is not so elegant.

Of course, a lot of people will not think like me and I'm sure it will be a big success for Vacheron.

Other watches I saw during the SIHH :

The Regulateur Tourbillon, very impressive :

The Chronomètre Royal without the red 12 :

Patrimony :

Other models, it's always a great pleasure to see them :

what kind of watch QdI really is...
04/18/2008 - 01:31

First off, thanks for the report! Very nice pictures in general and a nice angle to showing the QdI... especially the step-by-step watch building process on the new software.

But you also touched on a very interesting subject. Everyone gets captured by the concept of QdI mainly because of the personalization concept. I am no exception. I love the idea and it is by far a unique haute horologerie offer. But what kind of a watch is it?

I think VC has just created a niche within an already niche market. It created a personalized watch that cannot be exactly categorized (classic or sports) - and I find it so intriguing. It created a watch that brings out fun (personalization) and joy of two personalities (sports - rubber strap/titanium combo and/or rather classic and elegant with RG and palladium on a strap combo). So the watch is actually what you make of it. VC leaves it up to you and your own preference what kind of a watch you end up at the end of the day with. Isn't it fun?!

Yes, QdI is a fun watch. And that's exactly what I want it to be!

PS. If there was no personalization feature on QdI, I would undoubtedly go for the date only in Palladium. The case and the design speak right to my heart.

Yes for a "HL" QdI - date only - in Palladium

Thanx FX! I think we are in a period where categories no longer
04/18/2008 - 12:31

have any meaning of course if you take the extremes a Patrimony Contemporaine manual wind is a dress watch and the Overseas is a sports watch but then there is everything in the middle. What category does an Urwerk 201 or MB&F Horological Machine n°2 fall in? If I want to be less extreme in what category do you put Richard Mille watches?

I think that the QdI has created a niche for itself as it is the only really contemporary collection from a very high end manufacture which fills the gap which existed until today between the new commers of high horology which are very design oriented and the traditional houses which were rather classical. With the Qdi you get the best of both worlds!

I don't know if the QdI will be a commercial success but

kudos should be given to VC for trying something new, something that has not been done before by any other brand in its league (PP, AP, Lange). It is easy not to take risks and give the public what they are used to recieving but here VC has created a very cool modern watch and still kept its traditional heritage.

Furthermore the personalization is a great leap forward! Until now the only personalization you had was the choice of strap color, with the QdI its not bespoke but pretty close and the fact that they embrasse modern techniques such as the computer aided configuration system should also be applauded.

Everyone always refers to Breguet (the man) to define classical horology but maybe the QdI is what Breguet would have done had he been alive today.

Let's not be afraid of change...

Amen to that!! NT

Respected as a man of few, but significant posts.

Quality over quantity, VC-style...

Very nice pics and approach of this QdI, FX!
04/18/2008 - 22:01

I find this approach quite pertinent offering possibility of combining metals with dials and movement.

The result is up to you: either you go on a dressier way, or in a bit more sportive direction, without being at extremes as Alex suggested.

Now, there is room for people to adjust their choice according to their personnality, and getting some complications.

And I am happy that VC jumped the step by trying such novelties.

Thanks FX for this marvelous report...
