New Look!

Over the last 18 months, my love for the dark blue strap of my VC has really grown.

I remember when I first received my watch I wanted to change the strap to a black one. I did purchase the black strap, but I decided to give the blue strap a chance, and now I don’t think I would ever consider this swap.

However, since seeing the new SS/Ti version of the Overseas, I have been wandering what my 47212 would look like with a grey strap… With the economic downturn, buying a strap also seemed a more sensible way to ‘update’ my collection rather than buying a new piece.

So with the help of Alex, I recently got my hands on a mouse grey strap, and I am really pleased with the result! I’ve included a few pics to give you an idea, but in reality the strap does not look as dark

I have to admit I am still not sure which strap I prefer – the blue or the grey. At this time I would have to say the blue, but I guess it would be because I am more used to it. But it’s nice to have a little bit of change.New Look!

And now, to make my dear fellow Loungers cringe…New Look!
It might be a blast from the past, but when I was still looking for the 47212/ 47112, I was told that Michael Mann, the director of Miami Vice, loved the 47112 so much that he bought one for himself and had the character Sonny wear it in the movie. The 47112 was then deemed to be a ‘Bad Boy’ watch, and I made the confession that I would indeed like to wear that baby, ‘bad boy style’… with a white strap…

Well, I am attending a wedding in a beach resort in Mexico this weekend, and I will be wearing an ivory linen suit. This kind of opportunity doesn’t show itself very often, as Doc reminds us, ‘Carpe Diem’….

So, ladies and gents, without further ado…

Pictures would look much nicer with the ocean in the background, and with the sleeve of my ivory linen jacket...

Are you also going to forego socks and a collar shirt?

Hi Francois! That watch is really stunning, I can't stop looking at it whenever a picture of it is posted. I think the grey strap made for a nice combo but I really love the blue one that came with it, that is one of the nicest straps Ì've seen. I loved the Miami Vice story but I do think I would switch back to the grey/blue strap soon as well. All the best Martin
I love reading about the joy you get from your VC

It makes it all worthwhile, doesn't it?  :-) Your enthusiasm is wonderful and contagious!  Thanks for sharing Francois. BR, Dan P.S.  Long-term, I like the blue strap the best.  But variety is the spice of life, if your straps aren't already of the quick change variety, you should convert them.

Hi Dan, Could you elaborate on the quick change variety of straps? I did not know they exist. Thanks, Marko
Hi Marko

Quick change straps have a cut out slot on the underside, which is paired with a quick change pin (one with a small lever to contract the pin for installing/removing the strap very easily, without the need for a specialized tool). Here is a picture of what one looks like. In the past I thought one had to buy a non-VC strap to have this feature, since VC does not offer quick change straps that I know of.  But just about a month ago, I realized that one can buy a specialized, simple, hand tool to make the cut out in any strap and buy the pins. On the second day after I received my first VC, I tried to change the strap using a Bergeon tool, but only ended up breaking the tip off of one of the pins.  This watch was a 10 year wedding anniversary present from my wife and you can imagine the trouble I got myself into.    I am no longer allowed to change a normal strap, EVER - therefore the interest in quick strap alternatives for me.   BR, Dan
hi dan, i did consider this option, however, i'd prefer the curve lugs

pins that came with VC.  and thanks for the warning of  the other possible outcome of using the bergeon tool, i once scratch the lugs of one of watch and since then, i have live with that phobia.
I noticed the curved pins too after my aforementioned fiasco

Luckily I had a local watch repair shop, located in a NJ shopping mall, that made some curved pins for me while I ordered new ones from VC.  I'm lucky that when I went to the shop, the manager was the one on duty and he bent some straight pins for me.  He is also willing to install some curved quick change pins into a VC strap that had been modified with the appropriate, cut, slot.  I'm pretty lucky because the manager had never seen a VC in the metal before, loved the watch, and therefore was willing to help me out. e
great grey strap gave yr watch a different look, very nice. btw, is it
11/11/2009 - 14:50
difficult to do the strap change yourself ? as i am hardly a handy man, my strap change is usually done by my friendly dealer as i have scratch my watch once , so i have no option for straps. btw the grey strap really suit yr micro-blasted grey dial. great choice
Thanks for keeping the place alive, Sonny...I mean Francois

As the guys mentioned, your enthusiasm is very contagious and I enjoy the interesting threads you've come up with since your return. Like everyone, I think the grey strap suits the dial color quite well and give the watch more latitude (less formal than the very nice navy strap). As for the white strap, be careful not to outshine the bride and groom with your timepiece.  Its your (fabulous) watch and your (2nd) life, so "just do it" and enjoy!  Do post pics of the watch with your outfit for the wedding. Cheers! Kazumi
Looking good!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Francois, Great little anecdote.......you'll certainly be the talk of the wedding with the white on white look.......what kind of shoes will you wear???? I definitely like the Navy Strap way better than the grey one Francois but that's just my opinion.  Plus I'm a dark blue strap guy and replaced the brown strap on the RG Malte Chrono with a dark blue strap and I love that combo.  That watch is just soooooooooo gorgeous that you could wear it with a trash bag tie and it would be awesome......it's impossible for that watch to be anything but stunning. Have a terrific time and please post some shots with the whole outfit.....maybe autographed as well!! All the Best, Tom
Nice Look..Now if you....
