New Patrimony display case is fraying already

Hi All,

I bought a brand new Patrimony reference 81180 in white gold back in February this year and have been keeping it in the very nice box/display case.  Since it is a manual wind, I have to take it out and wind it up every day.  The pillow that you strap the watch to is actually a fairly tight fit and recently I have noticed that the pillow has been fraying already. The material seems to be quite sensitive to that and I am not sure if there is any way to prevent it.  Does anyone have this problem?  Do most people use their dispay box in this way or do you tend to just use a different type of box for everyday storage.  I like the display box but obviously don't want it completely destroyed in a very short time.

Below are a couple of pics to explain what I mean.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have not had this problem. Maybe you should show to VC.

Hi Stephen. I have never seen this before and have quite

a few of these pillows in my collection. I would take the pillow to your Authorized Vacheron Constantin dealer and I would imagine they will exchange it on the spot for a new one. That's why there are authorized dealers. I am also not using all my pillows, as the watches have graduated to winders and custom boxes, so if you really get in a bind, I can send you one of mine--they are fairly generic (not all of course).

Best,

Thanks Tim.  I actually didn't buy the watch from an AD but from a grey market dealer.  Do you think that the AD would still exchange the pillow?

I keep all of my automatic watches on winders (I use the Wolf Module 4.1 winders and love them), but since they are manual wind, I keep my Patrimony and Speedy in their original box.  If I add a few more pieces, I will probably go with a custom box.

Hi Stephen !

I have never had any such issue with my VC pillow, but  I have experinced similar problem with boxes of other brands like IWC, Longines etc which use similar material. To my knowledge this happens more in areas of high humidity. Therefore placing a dehumidifier may help.

Also, I do not use the original box for everyday use. Snice I have a decent collection cheeky I use a multiple watch box !

Vishal.

Thanks Vishal.  I am living in Japan so I guess that qualifies as a high humidity area (although Feb to April is not too bad, I hate to think what will happen with this during the rainy season in June...sad).

Do you have any recommendations for good watch boxes?

Cheers,

I never use the original box for storage so have not encountered this problem but

as others say you may want to go to the VC boutique in Ginza and see if they can change the pillow for you. Most watch dealers also have boxes you can store your watches

Thanks Alex.  Will give that a shot.

Hi All, Quick update on this.  I had actually been using the little pillow from the carrying care and since it was a different size and material, it wasn't rubbing on the display material as much and seemed to be ok.  I happened to visit the AD in Ginza today to finally pick up the brown strap I had been looking for (will post some pics separately) and mentioned to them about the pillow fraying.  They gave me the whole display unit (pillow and base) with no questions asked. Great service there in Ginza.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, I might not have even thought to ask the AD.

CHeers,

Stephen
