Doc Has got me going down memory lane and thought I would dig this one up. Its a ref 4072 made in the 1940's. Case is rose gold and measures 34.5mm in diameter, with square pushers, snap back and very elegant shaped lugs. The dial is 2 tone gilt with applied numeral on 6 & 12. Great part of the vintage watches is they take on a patina that gives them a look you cannot find on new watches, plus they keep great time...what a bonus.
They don't make 'em like that anymore.
The size is a little small by today's standards but the overall balance of the sub-dials and the main dial is textbook perfect and hard to find nowadays (with watch cases outgrowing their movements). Plus, as you mentioned, the patina adds that extra "character" found only in vintage pieces.
All I have in the form of a vintage is this. Not as old, definitely not as good, but it was free so I'm not complaining.
What a lovely colour. A great watch.
The shape of the lugs is exquisite. I hope you are wearing this watch.
Enjoy it on your wrist in good health.
I love VC Chrono and whish to get a Vintage like that in my life
elegant out there.
Even though Vacheron Cosntantin is more "known" for the vintage fan shaped lugs the ref 4072 is just as attractive.
You made my day John
Wear it in the best of health and would love to see more scans...
Acrylic crystal? Wear it in good health!
Hi Rei, Definately plastic crystal(s).
may it only time happy moments for you!
I could steal that from you
It's a real truly beauty,
and the SQUARE buttons,
which I just love
Why don't I get them?
You other guys seems to have one in every drawer
May I ask if you bought it at an auction ?
Really nice vintage watch! Just the square pushers I don't really like ^^
What is the material of the dial for a such wonderful patine?
Hi Fred, Good question on the dial, I will need to research what Vacheron used for metals on their dials in the 40's. The coating is similar to gilt. Surprised you don't like the square pushers, they have a nice vintage look.
These were purchased from a collector several years ago. I traded them for a Patek and just now got them back. There is a total of 4 watches, 4072RG chrono, 4178RG chrono, 4560YG calendar, and a 4240YG calendar. I attached another picture with both chronos together. You need to get one they are fun to wear and look at.
Hi Alex, I agree and after a long sabbatical from vacheron I am having a blast getting back. I will post the calendars later today, is there a method to post more than 1 picture per posting????
process as posting one: click on the "+" icon upload your photo, once your photo appears on screen click on the "+" icon and do again for as many photos you want to upload. Just don't forget to leave a space between each photo.
These vintage VCs can become addictive :-)
Here are some side shots. They show how sharp the pushers are and the lug profiles. john
4 VCs for one Patek?
I don't know what PP model it was, but just by looking at the pics you're posting, I'm pretty sure you must have had the best end of the bargain...
The more I look at all these vintage watches, and the more I want some... either some square ones or some chronos... sigh...
The only hic for me is the size - 34mm seems a little bit small...
John, congrats on such beautiful pieces!
Hi Veillotron, I agree about the 34mm being on the small size but the lugs make it much larger on the wrist. I will take some wrist shots friday. Would like to get some opinions on your thoughts. I will also take a wrist shot of the Patek 5970 for comparison.
John, I think you must really be on a cloud and breath some happiness!!!
I am looking for a while for a chrono with fan lugs, if possible, in such good conditions, as I think, and this is not a surprise for Alex, Doc and some others, that it is the best look ever made, with an unique spirit! This patina is also proper to VC.
I hope to be as lucky as you are, in the future...
