the one that got away......

harry tan of purists posted a thread on the above topic. and it reminded me of this VC that got away... perhaps u may want to share your painful story. here's mine other than a lange's datograph for usd 25k.

ouch !!! a VC triple date with 52 weeks indicator. that was before i am truly infatuated with VC's works. back then in 2006, i was only concentrating buliding a chronograph collection i hold grail. i asked a friend who is interested in moon watches to get it as it was too attractively priced even comparing with any triple date calendar of an ordinary brand, the size is good and it even features the moon with stars, i even offered to buy it when he is sick of it at a later date. course he did not and it became a regret among us......

if u are interested in how the watch looks , here is a thread of the exact watch i miss and since then it has never appeared anywhere for sale :

note from Alex: Aaron I replaced your link to TP to a link to the same exact subject put posted on HL :-)

the one I often bang my head against the wall for...
01/07/2008 - 11:36

was a new old stock vintage VC chronograph 4178 in rose gold with perfect dial. I had found the watch for sale on a vintage dealer's website (this is back in 2002 or 2003) and was selling for about $15,000. I negotiated for quite some time with the dealer but he refused to budge his price. Needless to say that the watch sold and today if I want the same thing I will need to pay over 3 times what was originally asked for

Here's the scan which I have kept from the dealer's website as to punish myself eachtime I look at it

i did the same, i kept yr photos of the watch.........................

as a consolation/punishment of my poor decision. it is a bitter-sweet feeling, on one hand u get to see the watch as and when , the other u can't feel it.

and i really empathise yr miss,  regret have to add salt to yr wound, that one is truly gorgeous.

btw, this is one of yr photos kept in my storage till this day :

these photos were taken at a dealer's, he told me these calendar/week

models were in rather high demand and pretty hard to come by. It was the 1st time I had seen one of these in the flesh and its true that they are awsome, the subtle guillochage and gorgeous moonphase are really something.

not forgetting the subtle twinkle stars rarely seen nowadays.sigh.nt.

and not forgetting all for the price of usd 8.5k.....................

yr revenge is sweet

ouch :-) (nt)

I too missed buying this watch ...once a few years ago. But then last year I found another for sale in the US. I jumped. I took it with me on a trip to Geneva (TimeZone tour) and Dominique Bernaz was so great in having it certified and getting me a CofA.

I do believe I've posted some photos here, somewhere .

Its a wonderful watch, worth the wait!

oh yeah....thanks for rubbing in. :) nt.

Ooh, this is gorgeous!

Wish I had one...

A recent miss...Darn!
01/07/2008 - 17:32

there is something about the maltese cross on the dial. is it.........
01/07/2008 - 23:49

diamond studded or is it a variation of the logo? interesting.

the Maltese cross logo is actually diamond studded, VC did this

on certain models, I don't know why.

so many...where to begin?
01/07/2008 - 13:40

There are quite a few watches which I regret not having bought but my greatest regret is the Roger Smith Series 1. I had vaguely heard of him and had seen the Series 1 in person which I had really liked but since I didn't now much about the watchmaker and wasn't sure he would still be around in a few years time, I wasn't sure I wanted to put my hard earned funds into such a "under the radar" watchmaker.

Today Smith is recognized as one of the greats and the price of his Series 2 is sky high!! The Series 1 was made in 12 pieces at almost 1/4th of the price of the Series 1. I have never seen a Series 1 on the second hand market and if one ever turns up I'm sure it will be at a high "premium"

these watches that got away are all so beautiful and bitter-sweet.nt.

I agree with you the price of the Series 2 is sky high...
01/08/2008 - 05:02

I really love the Series 2, but while it is a beautiful timepiece, I have a hard time justifying to myself its price... At a 1/4 of its price, I would put an order in today!

I know what you mean....
01/07/2008 - 20:39

They both got away :-(

One for a crapy italian watch thing and the second one even took my minute repeater with diamonds away from me...

oh my oh my. big misses (no pun intended) nt.
