Past and present

I took some pictures of a 1995 Les Historique ref 47101 in yellow gold next to a 4178 rose gold made in the 40's. Its interesting to see how Vacheron was able to keep classic lines at the same time giving the Les Historique a new look. The crown and  pushers are a ;little bigger the sub dials being framed in gold and of course the dial is slightly different.

If you had to choose just one which one would it be. Looking forward hearing everyones opinions. They are both beautiful IMO.

I'm surprised that the original chrono is pudgier then its modern

reincarnation! The case and the lugs of the 4178 are thicker.

As much as like the Chronographe Historique I much prefer the vintage 40s model just because it has that special patina that only time can give and which the Chronograph Historique does not have.

Actually if you didn't include the crystal

The 4178 is thinner. With the crystals included the 4178 is 12mm, while the 47101 is 11mm, w/o the 4178 is just over 8mm while the 47101 is just under 10mm.

Thanks for the pics...

The older is really nice with its curvated glass!

It's a tough call for me

They are both lovely, I would be very happy with either of them

So which one do I prefer... hmmm...

I think I would have to say that I prefer the 4718 because of the following:

1) The case is in RG vs. YG

2) The lugs are amazing

3) I prefer the smaller crown and pushers

I say it was a tough call because I prefer the dial of the 47101:

1) I really like the gold around the sub-dials

2) I prefer the way the hours are marked

4178 with no hesitation

4178 is my choice!

I like the dial much better (I don't like the gold ring on the sub-dials), also it's in rose instead of yellow. But it's thicker yeah?

4178 gets my vote

I'd also pick the 4178 because I like its pushers and the lack of gold trim around the small dials.  This is enough for it to overcome its thickness and hour marker disadvantages (to me) vs. the Historique.  (Though I'd be truly happy with either.  Maybe we can get one made for the HL/Radek inspired, custom, complication watch? )

I also cast my vote for the 4178 which makes it unanimous. I visit another forum (PP)and its just the opposite. I would post vintage watches and many would like them very much but if given the choice the newer contemporary watch would always be the preferred. Its nice to see the appreciation for the vintage watches.....Thanks for feed back.

Why PP's owner is so focus on the present?

I cannot say for sure. Perhaps its the size and contemporary looks. Could also be the safety of buying new or like new, or perhaps its easier to learn about the newer models...or what I believe its a little of all the above.

4178 is my choice also.
