A personal story from dream to real

Dear VC Hour Loungers,
You remembered May 30th 2012 when we discussed on this project to create a small Hour Lounge Edition supervised by Alex. I proposed to start from a Toledo 1952 model.

Then, I shared with you some ideas and photos with part blue dial. You suggested a full blue dial and posted some blue dials already done by VC.

Regarding the moon phase disc, VC replied it is challenging due to the thicker engraved moon.
- First step was to test if it was possible to integrate an engraved moon phase under the main dial plate.
Hopefully, VC succeeded to modify the calibre in order to allow this new moon disc.
My Dream could have a potential life.
- Now, second step very challenging was to determine all modification in design, regarding family choices (me and my son) and respecting VC history and spirit.
It took some time as you could imagine.
-        suppress Automatic
-        add « Ursus Magnus » and “Etoile du Berger”
-        Blue dial with white railroad in the outer line
-        Blue markers for date and second markers
-        Blue arrow with red-orange arrowhead
-        Engraved Moon faces (smile and melancholic)
-        Special month modification (anniversary meaning)
-        Special decoration between moon faces with shooting stars
All these specificities was drafted and presented by “Les Cabinotiers” to VC designers before approval of the project.
The Concept Approval was given by Mr Juan Carlos Torrès and “Les Cabinotiers” and we could go further.
After many exchanges with designers, we defined each component one by one.
The blue color was really difficult to determine as our support: computer definition, RAL painting color reference are not reproducible.
- Third step was to discuss with artists who will realize dial and sub-dials.
A visit was planned with “Les Cadraniers de Genève” to discuss in details my wishes and what was possible to do (within my budget) as they could also create all specific demand if expected.
A new project was then finalized and in January 2013 we could officially start the creation.
Each part was created separately and I wished to check all before assembling. As you may know, for each “special command”, “les Cabinotiers” create 2 ex of each part (1 for back-up).
So, I choose my favourite parts and after VC team could start finishing, assembling and controls tests.
- Fourth step was to find a date in October to come with my son for the delivery in “VC Manufacture”.
A really UNIQUE experience in the great “HAUTE HORLOGERIE” world, represented by the most fabulous brand: VACHERON CONSTANTIN.
Many thanks to VACHERON CONSTANTIN, Mr Juan-Carlos Torrès, Alex, Dominique, Sabrina, Hervé, Vincent, Christian, Salvatore, all artists in the Manufacture and also in “Les Cadraniers de Genève”.

Congratulations. An excellent story and project. You
11/11/2013 - 11:43
have taken an already lovely VC and made it even lovlier !!! The entire colour scheme is superb, and I just love the Moonphase disc with the star constellations. The red arrow-head in the date hand is a lovely touch - adds a huge touch of extra charisma and personality to the whole dial.  I have been dreaming of a Les Atelier Cabinotier piece for some time now, but can't get my self around to a concrete idea. But your story really does inspire.  The funny thing is that many brands and their watches today seem to have lost their soul - especially with all complexity of movements and concept (tourbillons that go around 1000 different ways for example - all valid and relevant offcourse); in the midst of all this, VC still continues to make some of the most beautiful and timeless watches around.  Wear yours in good health.
Thanks kk

for your kind comments. And for adding to the red arrow-head, here is a SUNny touch (every week-end). Cheers, Liger
Thanks for the pic.

What an amazing project and what a fantastic result!  It is hard to believe that you were able to work with VC to actually improve the Toledo, but you did.  I especailly like the red for Sunday.  That is a nice treat every week, I am sure.  Your son is also very lucky. Best, Robert

Amazing journey Liger
11/11/2013 - 17:34
thanks for sharing your story from idea in your mind to watch on your wrist yes.  Although it must have seemed a long time, I'm actually surprised how fast it all came together.  Which part did you enjoy most, and what was most challenging?  Was there a point when you thought it might not go?
Re: Amazing journey
11/11/2013 - 18:00
In fact, all parts are enjoyable, but the moon disc and the "major ursus" were very difficult to finalize as you could not imagine how small are each details and how it is difficult to realize them. Each star is one design itself and one application made separately. Artistic works realized by VC designers and "Les Cadraniers de Geneve" are just incredible. Proportions are really challenging as we were working on 3X screen and after it should be applicated to 1/1 scale. Another difficulty was to define the blue color, you could not imagine!!! The blue have to be enough deep to mix with golden markers, silver stars and white letters. Not too light as it is not a sporty watch. Vacheron Constantin "Les Cabinotiers" are just WONDERFUL and realized all my wishes with supportive smiles. Congratulations ++++++++ Cheers, Liger
Re-bravo! Excellent taste (nt)

Independence Day here in Poland...
