Philosophia: one of VC's rare unique bespoke pieces to be made public

In 2006 Vacheron Constantin set up a bespoke department called the Atelier Cabinotiers, a first for any watch brand - this specialised service enabled having abespoke watch made to the custommers specifications, from just a different dial to a watch with a proprietary movement.

Unfortunately the designs belonging to the clients the brand could not communicate on these creations.

Luckyly the owner of this watch has accepted to share.

The owner's original idea was to have a tourbiloon minute repeater but with no hands! The tourbillon for the visual pleasure and the minute repeater to tell time. However as the project advanced it was decided to add only one hand which would advance in 24h cycles, a moonphase indicator was also added.

The base movement would be that of the 2755 (minute repeater, tourbillon, perpetual calendar with power reserve indicator on the back plate) but modified for the new indications.

Vincent Kauffman the designer and the client started working together on some sketches of what the watch was to look like, in terms of case design and dial layout

The (unfinished) case: the movement is linked to the case and the nback crystal as to create the most resonance, thus the clearest chime

Hi Radek, No it wasn't me (LOL) I did have a very interesting design for a perpetual+MP but the cost was "astronomical" so I went for something simpler. Regards, Joseph

Wow! A special watch...

But bit strange looking at a one-handed watch.
kind of funny, I agree, Rei but I guess it just gets a bit of getting
08/25/2010 - 20:13
used to reading time off of a one-handed dial. Imagine doing so had the owner gone ahead with his original idea and there'd been no hands telling time at all. That my friend would've been a watch that would only sound time... What an original concept!
A "true" minute repeater, Radek? hehe
08/28/2010 - 06:45
Brilliant, isn't it? No need to look at the dial/hands...you only need to trigger and use your ears to know what time it is
What is the dial made of? The first image of the dial alone...
08/25/2010 - 19:15
...looks like enamel but the finished product doesn't.  Oh, and the watch is stunning. Thanks to all for sharing.
the dial is made of gold, it is not enamel

Congrats on the bald project to the happy owner and VC. And most of all thanks for sharing!!! We should really be getting to see more of those extraordinary Les Cabinotiers wonders
Brilliant!

That is really a superb use of Vacheron's cusom watchmaking facility. The watch is unique in meaningful ways; it retains the essence of VC; and it makes a true statement. All involved are to be congratulated.
Attention - Attention - Attention - ...

DANGER ZONE This post is one of the most inspiring posts I have seen for a while and therefore it is DANGEROUS! The idea itself, some of the details and the shown underdial photos ... - pure inspiriation for own creations.
  • Atelier Cabinotiers - is it heaven? ... or hell if you talk to your banker, your wife, ...
Anyway, the "devils advocat" presented to us a piece which was invented from a gentleman (or lady?!) with taste & knowledge and made in heaven Thanks for sharing! Oliver (who can´t work today, after seeing reading that post)
Amazing!

This is a very beautiful and original timepiece. This is probably a dumb question, but why no minute hand? I am assuming the blued hand is for the hours, but why no other for minutes? Thank you for a great report Alex as usual! Best, Mike
its the owner's decision, he considred that if he wanted the exact

time he could trigger the repeater. This type of one hand watch was not rare in the 18th c
Exceptional & truly creative!

Thanks Alex for a real eye-opener! Fernando
What a beautiful piece....

and the rear view is simply stunning. Well done all around. Thanks for sharing Alex. Amazing.

Hi Alex, how you doing? Hope all is well.  Anyway i saw in a small VC booklet, in the last page there is a photo of this watch and for the longest time i couldnt figure out what watch is that until I see this. Finally I know, its a bespoke ! Surprise and impress. Lovely watch indeed, the gentlemen has good taste. Congratulations. Just curious, whats the price point like? USD 1.8m? Regards Jacky
Hey Jacky good to see you here :-) I don't know the price but would

It seems that the Atelier Cabinotiers is turning out to be a very good move on the part of VC.   It really sets the Maison apart. I hope there will be an Atelier Cabinotiers piece for each and everyone of us Loungers somewhere along the way... Thanks for sharing Alex (and the owner of course). HAGWE Kazumi
