some vintage VCs can still be had at a "reasonable" price so don't completely turn your back on VC yet

You see some nice vintage at e**y from 2500 and up. Some other alternatives names in vintage are LeCoultre and Omega. They can be bought for $750 and up and they are of very nice quality.

The most important part of the process is to find someone who you can trust and knowledgeable. I am surprised at how many dealers selling vintage watches do not know much about the watches they are selling thus you can get stuck with a married piece (frankenwatch) or one that is totally sub-par. In vintage its always best to buy the best quality that falls within your budget, that way you can trade up at a later date.

Good Luck.
