Royal Eagle SS clasp

My husband recently purchased from a collector a Royal Eagle SS for me.  I love it!  The watch is about 5 years old, in a mint condition, hardly worn.  However, I'm finding it difficult to wear due to the clasp opening up several times during the day.  I thought it was becasue the band was a bit snug on my wrist and kept opening up with the movement of the wrist.  I had a half-link put in, so now the band is quite lose, and still the clasp opens whenever there is a bit of pressure applied to the bracelet with the movement of the wrist.  Has anyone else had a similar problem?  I'm wondering whether the clasp on my watch is faulty / damaged and needs to be replaced.

Hi Jolanta!

I have to say I had no experience with a bracelet on a Royal Eagle. But the same kept happening to my folding clasp on a leather strap. And the clasp was quite new and wasn't worn all that much.  I could barely stand the feeling of the unsnapping clasp while driving a car, it just drove (no pun intended ;-) me nuts. So I guess it may be a problem with the Royal Eagles, some vulnerable bridge in the clasp that wears off too quickly. I guess Royal Eagle isn't very popular among the Loungers here so I am not sure you will get much response on the subject. Just to cut my story short and handle the problem, I went to my local jewelrer and asked him to redo the folding clasp (mine is rose gold) for me by installing a screw that holds the part with the Maltese cross fast. It is a solution used in the new Malte and Overseas folding clasps. It really helped the unfolding clasp and reduced such occurances by 90%, so I guess it wasn't perfect but almost there. BTW, your name spells very Polish. Is that right? Best Radek PS. Below you'll find a picture of my limited edition Royal Eagle which I find absolutely adorable. The watch once belonged to a very famous German actor and had been given it to him as a gift by Vacheron Constantin. The guy just didn't take to liking it too much and sold it right away with no wrist-time wear. It's a number 50 out of 50 pieces made so that makes it all the more worthwhile  I this US limited edition quite attractive as well...

Hi Radek, yes, you're absolutely correct in your assumption.  I'm born and raised in Gdansk, and although I now have been leaving abroad longer than I hadlived in Poland, I still call it home and visit annually. I have read some of your posts on this forum, including the one about the Royal Eagle.  Nice find!  This is only my first VC watch, so I'm a complete newbie to the world of high-end "toys".

Same with First Gen Overseas

With both the chronograph and time-only models of the original Overseas, the clasp would "pop" open at very inconvenient moments .  The design wasn't sufficiently robust, probably to make it streamlined to suit the bracelet.  Don't know if the problem was corrected with the current OS??
Hi and welcome, I think you need to have the clasp either changed or

repaired. All the best and congratulations on a beautiful watch.

I've not had this problem with the newer OS bracelet. It stays closed without a problem. However, I have had the problem with the newer design deployant buckle. I have one on my Atelier Cabinotier watch and one on my Royal Eagle Dual Time. On both the deployant pops open unexpectedly. Its never happened on the older deployants. I did try to fix it by gently squeezing the bars on the deployant together (very gently) and it did help a bit. Its just a friction fit but it should snap in better than it does. A VC repair facility could adjust yours, I'm sure. Regards, Joseph

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.  It looks like I'll have to take it in for a repair.  It's due for a periodic maintenace anyway, as I don't think that it has been serviced yet since it was first sold. I'm new to VC, and this is only my second high-end watch.  I'm not really a watch afficionado -that's more of my husbands' interest - and I'm not into jewelery and bling either (my husband counts his blessigs ), but I must admit I'm starting to like this!

We don't have many female Vacheronistas, please stay awhile. This hobby is quite addicting and I've found the people here are most kind and helpful. BR, Dan

Never had a problem

Never had a problem with the deployant on my 47400, but I wear it loose and cool like Nicky Sarkozy.
