SIHH and some Overseas design ideas

I also want to thank VC, Alex, Dan, Veronique and everybody who attended the Monday-Tuesday trip to SIHH 2014. It was a marvellous experience to meet you all. Interesting conversation (not just about watches) and a fantastic welcome to a rookie like me.
During the tour of the Manufacture I visited the design department. It was very interesting to hear Vincent Kauffmann and his young team talk about the development off new watches. The visitors were allowed to have a go at ”redesigning” the good old Overseas Chronograph. As you can see a lot of more or less creative ideas were the result. I am not sure VC is going to adapt all our suggestions. I still recommend the yellow version. It will sell like hotcakes wink
Back at the SIHH show Alex and Dan gave us a very good presentation of all the stunning new watches.
Thanks again for a brilliantly organised event .

Jens-Kristian, it's good to have your perspective of the visit. Couple of interesting photographs too! I'm rather puzzled why the eleven designs were placed on the floor? Tony
Well, I'm "floored" by the creativity!

LOL, turn-about is fair play Tony angel.  Honestly, some very creative designs, worthy of production yes

Thank you for your thoughts on the trip. As a rookie myself who hopes to attend an Hour Club SIHH gathering someday, I read your post with interest. That first candid photograph really makes one long to be at the table. What a marvelous experience it all must have been!
I realized when doing this workshop how difficult designing is, I had

zero idea and zero inspiration once in front of the computer!

For some reason, a computer enabled with design software

is often a black hole for creativity, swallowing one's nascent ideas. Many designers try to avoid this seeming inevitability by hand sketching their thoughts before confronting the "beast." Having not yet attended SIHH and its design workshop, I don't know if attendees were given an opportunity to explore with pen and paper, but I can definitely empathise with Alex's difficulties. Despite the "black hole challenge," the concepts photographed by JKS were all quite thought-provoking.
thanks for sharing, must have been a great experience :)

Perhaps I'm going to get expelled from the Lounge now but I have to share my thoughts around all the creative ideas on the Overseas that I see above... frown First of all, I'm impressed of the amount of creativity and skills that shows in the pictures. Really good work from all that participated! yes That said, it makes me reflect somewhat on the "turning" of the make if they (or some of them) become true... When I bought my Overseas, I did it mostly for two reasons: 1. quality of the finish and overall quality 2. the discretion of the watch, and in a way it's uniqueness in that sense, sporty but still in a "dressed classy way" I mean, I can find plenty of colourful options if I look at AP RO and ROO or Hublot BB or some other makes and they are also (at least considered) high quality watches. But after looking around (not that extensive I admit) I have a hard time finding the clean and classy design that today's Overseas have... I wonder where that uniqueness will go if VC turns in the same (?) direction. IMHO I think it becomes less classy for every new colour added, I'm sorry... Of course it is a direction that probably has it's purpose - in attracting new customer segments, but will it still be the same? I would not consider bying a Overseas with any of those designs, perhaps the top left one excluded. Now, I am too new as a VC owner and I haven't followed the discussion long enough to get the "whole picture" and I may have missed out something (or a lot of things), perhaps it is not meant to be examples or ideas to protoype or test possible new design. In that case I am sorry if I got it all wrong... Best to all, Eric
Eric these are not design ideas but results of designs made by Hour
