Triple Calendar Addition...

I have always been fond of Triple Calendar watches and Vacheron has produced some exquisite ones in the past and still do.
I am fortunate enough to have acquired a few in the past including my beloved  TOLEDO.
In the early spring I spotted a vintage piece that was very appealing with a beautiful case and lugs, a fine movement and a gorgeous dial. It did not have a moon face, but, hey, you can’t always have everything.
It was in Barcelona, so with Alex’s help, after I paid for it, I had it sent to Geneva for certification. Then with Lin’s help, it came back to Paris where during a fantastic dinner at Les Jalles, he presented me with my little trésor.
As you will see in the many photos below, the lugs and case are a high point in Vacheron’s design from that period.
There are also a few photos with the watch’s “big brother”, from the same period. Both have a very interesting design feature that is obvious from the photos.  I've also incudes to "artsy-fartsy" shots at the end. cheeky
Well, here it is my "old/new" 4240.

Hi. It's a sublime watch and the gorgeous pics do it justice. Thank you for sharing. Dje
Thank you
10/07/2012 - 16:36
for your kind comments. It is a wonderful design and I am very pleased. It turned out to be an excellent example of the model, in great condition. Best, Joseph
Three things I took notice of right off the bat...
10/07/2012 - 11:42
- Roman numerals look great and fit this beautiful timepiece like a glove - the champagne (!) dial gives off a fantastic shine - I just love the use of French names for days of the week and months - it's so romantic . I prefer it way over the English ones. Marvellous watch, may it time only happy moments!
Thank you, Radek, for your kind words.
10/07/2012 - 16:40
We are of the same mind-set. Those very same features are what attracted me (plus the case design). I also find the French dates more appealing. Best wishes, Joseph
That’s a beautiful watch , congratulations to you on your find.
10/07/2012 - 12:08
You have certainly taken some wonderful shots of it. Thanks for taking the time. I’m amazed how good your dial is looking. Has it been redone because it should have spots here or there on it? If yes, please tell me who has done it. If no, then there is just one word and that’s WOW! That piece is so elegant and there are so many lovely details on the case. The red gold hands / markers on the dial just scream class and elegance. I need one of these watches one day. Excellent photos with your pocket watch showing the similarity in the case design. Wear in the best of health. Kent
Thank you, Kent,
10/07/2012 - 16:48
for your kind words. The dial has been redone. I suspected it and  it was confirmed when I received the Certificate from VC. I don't know who did the work or when, but it was a very good (but not great) job. Under magnification, there are a few spots which I could see, but not many. I did touch them out with Photoshop. You can't see them unless you use high-power magnification. I may take it with me to Geneva and have VC take a look for their opinion. But the spots are not visible or barely visible to the naked eye. The case was in pristine condition, as was the movement. Warm regards, Joseph
Having seen this one in the flesh I can say the dial is superb and the

case in mint condition. Overall it is a fantastic addition:-)
Alex, thank you
10/07/2012 - 17:02
for your kind comments. And thank you so much for your help with this watch. I am very grateful to you and Lin for your gracious assistance. Best regards, Joseph
Beautiful 4240 Joseph!
10/07/2012 - 15:06
I have always loved triple calendars (and QPs) as well.  Its sibling, a 4241, should be arriving here sometime in November, after a rather long stay in Geneva.  I will post photos as soon as it does, though my photographic skills cannot compare to yours.
Re: Beautiful 4240 Joseph!
10/07/2012 - 17:06
Michael, many thanks for your kind words. Very much appreciated. I know you will love the 4241 with signature tear drop lugs. Its a beautiful watch! I look forward to seeing the photos which I'm sure will be great. But I'm looking forward even more to seeing you again (and Alessandra, of course) and seeing the watch on your wrist. Best wishes, Joseph
What a sight to behold
10/07/2012 - 18:32
Beautiful Joseph, what more can be said?  Well, your third last shot is awesome and my new desktop background (with your permission of course).  Those claw lugs and reeded case are so iconic to V&C of the period and simply wonderful.  The soleil dial really pops in your photos...it looks flawless heart.  Contrasting with the pocket watch is a great way to show the continuing heritage of design too.  Looking forward to movement shots when you have a chance.  I see the period wallet...did it come with box and papers?
Thanks Dean
10/07/2012 - 19:42
I'm glad you enjoyed the picks. The period case was included BTW. Yes, the soleil dial is really a nice touch. I tried to bring it out in the last photo too. The second hand at 6 o'clock has a nice concentric ring pattern. I'm not sure if it was guillochéd though. Regards, Joseph
Absolutely Beautiful and a PERFECT companion to "Big Brother"
10/07/2012 - 18:38
I love these triple-dates, probably more than QPs as the design is simpler and much more legible to me. Congratulations on a wonderful find! BR, Dan
Re: Absolutely Beautiful and a PERFECT companion to "Big Brother"
10/07/2012 - 19:45
Thank you Dan, As soon as I got the watch, I knew I had to photograph the two together. For me, its a real signature piece of Vacheron heritage. Best, Joseph
You were not kidding, Joseph
10/07/2012 - 20:31
You really did have something to show...not that I doubted you for even a second.  I know better by now. There is just nothing not to love about this triple date.  The roman numerals, the sculpted hour markers, the gorgeous lugs, the French day and month, the golden soleil dial, the reeded case, and thos lovely super-thin baton hands that VC continues to use today in certain watches.  I also love the blued date hand with the blue also used for the date numbers around the dial.  I wonder if that is common practice and I am just noticing here for the first time. This seems like a perfect example of a triple date watch, or what a triple date should be.  Your photos are amazing, all of them but the ones with the "big brother" are off the charts. It is just so nice to see these two side by side.  You must be a very happy boy, Joseph!  Best regards, Robert

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I tried to show the various aspects of the watch and I believe I succeeded. I try to be restrained in my comments but I am really ecstatic about this find. It's the definitive VC watch for all the reasons you mentioned. BTW, too bad about the Phillies. I think it's going to be SFO again but you never know. I like the Yankees in the AL, but I'm partial to Baltimore this year. I really am rooting for them. And they have the cutest logo! cool All the best, Joseph
What a beauty !

An essential watch of Vacheron Constantin, and he duet with the pocket watch is fantastic ! Big Congrats Joseph cheers Francois
Merci mille fois, Francois

As soon as I received the watch, I knew that I had to photograph them together. They are of the same vintage and I suspect that perhaps the same designer is responsible for both. Thanks again. I'm pleased you enjoyed the pics. Joseph

Excuse my French...angel But wow! You outdone yourself - again! Wonderful piece - absolutely astonishing! I love the dial, the colours (a nice mix of champagne, red and blue).. but the case and the lugs really set it apart... the 3rd, 5th and 8th shots are my favourite... May it time only happy moments, dear friend... A+, Francois
