Vacheron & Constantin, and an answer about service!

Dear Mila,

I have a VC, that's for the fourth (!) time, in as many years, is sent to Germany for repair...
That happens to all brands, just strange it nearly never happens to my vintage Vacheron&Constantin,
this for instance......

Vacheron & Constantin, and an answer about service!

The 'new' was sent over a month ago and it will take some months more,
at least that's my experience...
They seldom repair themselvesin Germany, rather send them to Geneva...

I think that's one of VC's weakest points, the service...

That and the obvious lack of a real book of the brand,
or rather several.
I don't understand why Vacheron & Constantin not want to publish a real book,
about their outstanding history and all their watches.
Perhaps they are trying to be unique in their own way.

A couple of years ago, I hinted that I, when retired, as I am now,
was interested in writing THE BOOK about Vacheron & Constantin,
I also had one of the best watch photographers deeply interested,
but now I lost the interest.

I read a very exclusive book, that I was presented with in Januaruy in Geneva, thank you very much again,
'High Society' by Nick Foulkes, who is a very competent and nice author.
A real coffe-table book, just beautiful.Vacheron & Constantin, and an answer about service!
It's really a beautiful book, which I read through in one day, but it's not a book about Vacheron & Constantin.
In fact it made me subscribe to one year of Vanity Fair (!), for my wife... Vacheron & Constantin, and an answer about service!

I think a good start for Vacheron & Constantin is to call them by their own name and not,
by a pet name, 'Vacheron Constantin'.
Girad - Perregaux, Jaeger - LeCoultre ( very complicated ), A. Lange & Söne, F.P. Journe the two last examples are both,
new creations.
Journe I respect as a the master he is, built it by his own magic hands,
but A. Lange & Söhne is a post war created watch company by the same owner as Vacheron Constantin,
as well as Jaeger - LeCoultre Vacheron & Constantin, and an answer about service!
Lange's history as a manufaturer of wristwatches started just some years ago.
Once upon a time it made just fantastic pocket watches and then it made other watches...
Still they are entitled to have their & Vacheron & Constantin, and an answer about service!

Just can't get it.

Or is it so bad that Patek Philippe are the leading name configuration.

Patek Philippe vs Vacheron Constantin ?
Yes I know I will get punished for this, but it's from my heart.

My last post, perhaps....
Doc
My Dear Doc, this is a sad post...
10/02/2009 - 08:27
It makes me sad for 2 reasons: 1) to hear that you believe as well that VC's service is one of its weakest points. Good to know that we're on the same page, but I am sad to hear that our favorite brand has not been treating you the way you deserve... 2) but more important is the news that you have lost interest in making the V&C book - I had been looking forward to it Cheers, Francois
"My last post, perhaps...." Doc, whats going on? I think one issue on
10/02/2009 - 12:59
the & could be that it would actually be a brand name change which could be more complicated that it seems, but there are some people in Geneva who are pushing for it
Hey Mats, you made me read your post twice you got me so intrigued...
10/02/2009 - 13:23
I really didn't understand your final statement... but now I know you were just pulling our leg and refered to that name comparison between Patek and Vacheron... Oh well, as you surely know Norbert Patek was a Polish master watchmaker - thus the great name. Other than that there is nothing so great about it and Vacheron (&) Constantin beats it all the way 100 years of history, heritage and expertise in master watchmaking must make a difference. And for me the proof is very clear - QdI
Hey Patek was just the investor the watchmaker genius was Philippe and
10/02/2009 - 13:29
he was French
Yep, got that mixed up - Czapek the other Pole was the watchmaker and
10/03/2009 - 00:15
Patek the salesman - they were the original founders of the manufacture. Then after a few years Czapek left the company and it was renamed after Patek and Adrien Philippe, the French master watchmaker... Anyway, I should be all about Patek, right? Guess I am not a very good patriot
Of course Radoslaw, Im pulling your legs!

But Francois, you misunderstood me, I'm not saying that VC have bad service. Quite the opposite! What I mean is that a 'small' brand that not got AD's in every country, is hampered by that, but if you follow other brands forums, the same goes for all. People complain of long service times, so that is not only VC, that goes for all. What I try to say is, if VC could be even better than the other brands in service, that would be a a tremendous gain. Some people, no names , has so many VC's, so it doesn't matter if one is on service, but others, early in their career, to be VC aficionados would appreciate a faster service, than produced by any of the 'fine brands'. That's what I mean Finally I know the man who shall write THE BOOK. He is a man with tremendous knowledge. We all know him. He is a magnificent writer, if any of you read his articles in the magazine 'Montres', which takes me about an hour, since it's in French More he is the insider and he already proved here, several times that he got all  the imformation needed, by his utmost articles. More, he handles both French and English excellent. Yep, ALEX of course, is the man We will all have to support him, but he has an elegant language, mixed with a sensible humor of understatements, which I just love So this what I wanted with my provoking post. To get all of you behind me and pray that Alex will write THE BOOK! Your own troublemaker Doc
you're making me...
10/02/2009 - 15:29
blush
You if anyone should not blush,
10/02/2009 - 16:21
as you know, I wouldn't write anything that I can't stand for OK, sometimes I provoke but without that you just sit relaxed and nothing happens. Alex, my dear friend, I mean every single word! I only whish I could handle this wonderful language, English, better, like my hero Winston S. Churchill, who got the Nobel Price in literature 1953, from my proud little country Sweden. Before I learned to read English really well, I had several 1st editions of his works in Swedish, but when I started reading his books in English, I really understood how beautiful a language can be. BTW now I'm reading this,   a 1st edition from 1900, written 1899 when he was only 25 (!), and he already has a wonderful fluent writing. I'm going so far, Alex, that I compare you with WSC , that would be overkill,  but you have an exceptional talent for writing. Please do it, I'll support you, for what that's worth..... Doc
I second you, Doc! Go, Alex!!! nt
10/03/2009 - 00:20
Provoking idea Doc!
10/05/2009 - 02:38
Yes, like everybody else, I would like Alex to write this VC book, but not if it means Alex stopping to write his monthly/quarterly articles... Plus Alex has this other little project that he needs to complete before he can take on the daunting task of writing the best ever VC book written... Re Service, I know that it is the same for most of the other brands, but still I would like to see more of these high end watch manufacturers focus more on servicing existing clients... CHeers, Francois
A point,
10/06/2009 - 16:22
that's what I mean, if only VC could be just an inch better than all the other, it would cash in I must say that the best service I have met is from Girard-Perregaux, they are fast and they really have given their efforts to a nice price, even a free service on a watch (new) that was 3 years old, that's what you appreciate when you spent a lot of money on a rare watch! This one   they serviced for no cost at all, because I bought it new and it had been lying for three years. Cheers Doc
Two topics...
10/03/2009 - 02:38
First, the service issues is hampered here in Canada by misunderstandings and miscommunication between the Richemont office and the Geneva factory.  I've certainly had my ups and downs with this situation but I've also found by approaching the people in Geneva I get first class service with a genuinely personal feeling .  Lets hope the recent workshops in North America give a renewed sense of the history and status of this most senior watch brand to Richemont staff over here! Regarding THE BOOK....somebody, please, write a history of 20th century Vacheron watchmaking to fill the obvious void.  That someone should/must have ready access to the archives and technical records as well as the connections to interview people directly involved in the brand's development during this period.  Hmmmm....yes, that could be
good controversy and even better prosposal ! alex, dean and mats .....
10/04/2009 - 05:26
yr painstaking effort to educate us of Vacheron and Constantin material should not be in the gutter and odd to be a nice coffee book. "Please consider the environment - do you really need to print this email?" - the footer from alex's email i would like to save the earth, but the materials like mats, dean, alex and some others have all been printed out and kept in a file and not i am not 100% satisfied, it should have been better placed in a nice binded book.
