Winders and settings

I have reviewed some of the threads on winders here and it appears that a winder (for a "simple" mechanical watch) is really a convenience more than a necessity.  It also appears that the settings do matter, as there was reference in one thread to a double-secret spreadsheet containing such information.

So, understanding that using one is optional, given that I only have simple watches - no "calendar" watches or anything like that - can someone recommend a good winder and suggest how I might understand the best settigns; i.e. direction, timing, etc?

Thank you.

If you don't have a calendar watch I would advise against a

winder as it will bring wear faster to your watch and thus service time

Thank you Alex.  I appreciate the suggestion.  Hopefully one day I will have a high complication that will require a winder.  Until then, I will refrain.  Thanks for the advice.
